Mystery (351)

Whether its solving a crime or finding an explanation for a puzzling circumstance, the main cast willingly or reluctantly become investigators who must work to answer the who, what, why, and/or how of the current dilemma. The narrative of mystery stories is always on collecting evidence, identifying suspects, and theorizing possible scenarios for the unexplainable, before finally capturing the perpetrator or resolving the current situation. Almost always, the audience has the same information as the main characters and anticipation is directed towards discovering the explanation, not what will transpire after the answer is found. Contrast with Suspense or Horror where often the audience has more information than the cast, which heightens the tension or fear of what will happen next.

"Bungaku Shoujo" to Shi ni Tagari no Pierrot

Nomura, MizukiTakeoka, Miho 2024
The "mysterious school comedy" centers on the unusual members of a high-school literary club. Touko Amano, a high-school senior who calls herself the "literary girl" as the club president, is actually a supernatural creature (youkai) that devours stories — she tears pages from books to munch on them. Her club subordinate is Konoha Inoue, a second-year high-school boy who writes stories every day for Amano to eat. He once wrote an award-winning novel, but he wrote it under the penname Miu Inoue so readers thought the author was a mysterious 14-year-old bishoujo novelist. The stress from the novel's fame and its movie and television drama plans turned Inoue into an introverted recluse.

Crimson-Shell

Mochizuki, Jun 2024
A genius mad scientist once bred a special flower in his quest for eternal youth and immortality, implanting the seeds of this "Premier Rose" in human beings. Housing roses inside their bodies granted the human hosts not only various benefits, but also various side effects, including the need for the roses to feed off of victims. The majority of the test subjects, "Black Roses," were used as living weapons and kept under control by their creator. One subject of the experiment was dubbed a "defective failure" and hidden away.

Claudia the "Rose Witch," also called a "Crimson Rose," normally does not need to feed on humans and only does so if she loses her self-control. When the Roses' creator disappeared five years ago, the organization conducting research swiftly rebranded as "Red Rose." Brought out of the shadows, Claudia became Red Roses' primary means to eliminate the suddenly untamable Black Roses.

Guarded by the "Thorn," Wilhelm, who shares a blood covenant with her—and working with a special division of Red Rose named "Crimson-Shell"—Claudia must survive betrayal by a suspected traitor within the organization, as well as discover the truth behind a "Jet Rose" who may be leading the Black Roses.

Midori no OuVerdant Lord

Takashige, HiroshiSoga, Atsush 2024
Set in the near future where Mother Nature has decided to fight back against all of the human encroachment.

It has your standard apocalyptic scenario, but we're right in the middle of the apocalypse actually happening, rather than the aftermath. Vines and foliage entangle cities, as large wooden mech-like creatures called Arethusa (named after one of the mythical Greek Hesperides that tended the gardens in a remote corner of the world) rampage through cities.

Our main character is Souma Shin, a punk kid out of Japan. We start off with him coming to visit his twin (?) brother Ken. All hell breaks loose as Shin finds a group of small kids being used for military purposes, and tries to save them in the confusion created by an Arethusa invading the compound.
