After seeing the Malaysian censorship of Attack on Titan, Japanese manga fans are stunned.

According to Anime Senpai, a tweet from a Japanese manga fan showcasing a panel from the hit series' Malaysian edition was recently published. The image in question depicts a swarm of Colossal Titans marching across the landscape as part of "The Rumbling." However, instead of their usual skinless appearance, they are modified to be wearing pants. AOT fans who saw it for the first time after it was released two years ago shared their reactions, with the tweet's poster claiming they couldn't "stop laughing."

Fans of Attack on Titan Considered Censorship

Many users replied to the tweet, expressing their confusion with the image. Some questioned why showing Attack On Titan's infamous array of violence was acceptable but not the lower half of a giant. Another user pointed out how the characters do not have genitals, so covering them up was a pointless act. Some even claimed that adding clothing to the characters somehow made the product seem "more erotic" than it was beforehand.

One Twitter user questioned the censoring further, bringing up the Female Titan. Before responding to their response with an apparent glimpse at the comic, they worried whether the publisher would add pants and a bra. The character is shown below in a swimsuit that covers her entire body. Many more responses included more images of the prohibited artwork, including characters like the Warhammer Titan and the Cart Titan. However, the article stated that no official confirmation of whether this was a fan modification was available at the time of writing.

The Anime and Manga Industries Face Censorship

Censorship in the animanga industry is nothing new, as re-edits and adjustments are common in worldwide releases of Japanese items. There have been numerous prominent cases of sexually provocative characters being censored in nations such as Indonesia, India, and China, among others. LGBTQ+ themes have also been removed in some situations, such as the censorship of Requiem for a Rose King. Some anime, such as Puni Puni Poemy, have been explicitly prohibited.

Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan is one of the most well-known properties in current anime. The anime adaptation, directed by Studio MAPPA, is nearing completion, with a recent important picture serving as the show's final new poster. The series is now available on Crunchyroll, with the final episode scheduled for release in Fall 2023.
