Marvel Has an Employee Whose Job It Is to Track the MCU’s Timeline

The timeline for the Marvel Cinematic Universe has only gotten more complicated the longer it has gone on. To lighten the lore load for writers, Marvel Studios reportedly employs a timeline keeper.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law head writer and producer Jessica Gao told The Direct that Marvel Studios has someone whose job it is to maintain continuity within MCU projects and ensure a cohesive timeline. Gao mentioned this when asked about where She-Hulk falls in the MCU timeline, saying, “It’s definitely after– post-Endgame. There actually is a Marvel person whose job it is to trace the timeline of everything. And we checked with him a lot about where the timing is. And so it’s like… the show is a few years after Endgame.”

Gao did not mention how long Marvel Studios has had a timeline keeper on their payroll, but in the interview, The Direct posits it could be sometime after the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is due to director Jon Watts mentioning during a promotional interview that he was shown a physical scroll with every single event on the MCU timeline, from the beginning of time. Whether the scroll is still in use is uncertain, but timeline questions are now directed to the timeline keeper according to Gao.

The MCU’s Timeline Is Getting Confusing

It also appears that not every MCU writer has used the timeline keeper’s services. Moon Knight writer Jeremy Slater is still unsure of where Moon Knight fits in the grand scope of the MCU’s chronology, due to a lack of confirmation on when the show would originally debut in relation to other MCU projects. Gao specified that she had to check with the timeline keeper, so employing their help could be up to the discretion of the individual writers for each Marvel project.

With both Doctor Strange and Loki repeatedly interfering with timelines on their adventures (in the latter’s case, creating a whole host of new ones), the timeline of the MCU is getting increasingly complicated as the Multiverse Saga develops. The introduction of previously separate Netflix characters such as Daredevil into the MCU timeline proves a challenge for any timeline keeper trying to sort out the full sequence of events. Daredevil’s appearance in She-Hulk could shed light on where he and others fit in the grand scale of the Marvel timeline.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law airs Thursdays on Disney+.
