Highlights
- Scream 7 may focus on Sidney Prescott’s relationships with other characters, as the Core Four might not return.
- Sidney needs supportive people around her to understand her experiences with Ghostface.
- Scream 7 should balance Sidney’s role as a final girl with her close relationships to avoid a melancholy tone.
Although no one is sure who will be cast in Scream 7 besides Neve Campbell, two members of The Core Four aren’t going to be part of the horror sequel. With fans wondering if Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding) should come back, they also have many questions about what characters will face the threat of another Ghostface. The characters are of course just as crucial as the Ghostface reveal near the end of the film since there needs to be plenty of character development and not just jump scares and kill scenes.
While it seemed like The Core Four were going to be in another movie in the slasher franchise, that plan changed, and fans want to know what that means for Sidney’s plotline. Although hopefully Mindy and Chad return, if they don’t end up joining Sidney on her quest to beat Ghostface, there are a few plot points and character decisions that should be part of Scream 7.
How Should Scream 7 Focus On Sidney Prescott And Move Away From The Core Four?
Scream 7 should create strong relationships between Sidney Prescott and the other characters, which will make up for the absence of the Core Four. It was enjoyable watching Sam and Tara Carpenter work with Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin because they were stronger as a team than they were on their own. Sidney will find herself in a scary position since this will be the seventh time that Ghostface has followed her and threatened her life. While Sidney is strong, beating Ghostface has often been a group effort since there is often more than one.
Sidney also needs some friends, or acquaintances at least, because she needs supportive people around her who understand what she’s been through. While fans are debating how much of Sidney’s family should be part of the main storyline, Sidney should have at least one good friend. At the time of this writing, only Neve Campbell has been confirmed as a cast member. If Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox) comes back, she’s already a fully developed character and could help make up for several characters not returning.
Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin gave an interview to Rue Morgue about Scream 6 and Gillett explained that Scream 6 focused on the dynamics between the Core Four since Sidney didn’t come back. After hearing this background, it seems likely that Sidney won’t be alone since that would make the movie’s tone too melancholy. Gillett said:
“Sidney is one of the most important characters ever created, so it was a challenge to figure out what the path forward was. I think in her absence, the responsibility that was on our shoulders was to make sure that we really dug deep into the new characters and their relationships, and make sure that we were bringing a level of connection to those people that Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson built with the original three.”
He added:
“It was early enough that we were able to focus the movie in on the returning cast, the ‘Core Four.’”
The writers/directors of Scream (2022) and Scream 6 developed Mindy, Chad, Sam, and Tara as the Core Four and it seems likely that this would have continued in the upcoming sequel. Scream 7 needs to find a balance between Sidney as a beloved final girl and someone who has close relationships. It’s important to show that she trusts a lot of people because one of them could be Ghostface.
What Happened To The Core Four In Scream (2022) And Scream 6?
The Core Four fight Ghostface in Scream (2022) and Scream 6, with Sam and Tara Carpenter playing a central role. In the fifth movie in the horror franchise, Ghostface attacks Tara and she survives, then recovers in the hospital. Sam realizes that she can’t trust her boyfriend, Richie Kirsch (Jack Quaid), and also processes the loss of her father Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich). While hopefully Scream 7 won’t include the scenes of Billy as a cheesy ghost, it was good to learn more about Sam and Tara’s family and why they have been estranged for a while.
Chad and Mindy are also a big part of Scream (2022). Chad becomes suspicious of his girlfriend Liv McKenzie (Sonia Ammar) and Mindy shares the horror movie rules like her uncle Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) once did.
The Core Four move to New York City in Scream 6 and uncover the new Ghostface together, which proves they have a tight bond that can’t be broken. It would be satisfying and also logical if Sidney Prescott updates audiences on Sam and Tara at some point in Scream 7, and if Chad and Mindy don’t come back, she should let fans know what they’re doing as well.
