While the DC Universe film Black Adam ultimately won its third consecutive weekend at the domestic box office, the anime feature One Piece Film: Red was king for a day.

Per Box Office Mojo, film narrowly won the box office for that day, brining in approximately $4.826 million to Black Adam’s $4.726 million. According to Deadline, Thursday previews account for $1.7 million of One Piece Film: Red’s opening-day total.

Of course, Black Adam quickly took its crown back, bringing in a total of $18.5 million over the weekend of Friday, Nov. 4 to Sunday, Nov. 6, with One Piece Film: Red’s weekend total coming in at $9.5 million. One Piece Film: Red originally premiered in Tokyo this past July before its nationwide release in Japan in August. It made ¥17.7 billion JPY in Japan and, to date, has made $171.9 million USD worldwide. “Uta — the most beloved singer in the world whose voice has been described as ‘otherworldly’ — is renowned for concealing her own identity when performing. Now, for the first time ever, she will reveal herself to the world at a live concert,” an official synopsis for the anime film reads.

“With the Navy watching closely, the venue fills with Uta’s fans — including excited pirates and the Straw Hats led by Luffy, who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance — all eagerly awaiting the voice that the whole world has been waiting for to resound,” it continues. “The story begins with the shocking revelation that she is the enigmatic Shanks’ daughter.”

Don’t Give It Up, Luffy

Written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda, the original One Piece manga launched in 1997 and is still ongoing to this very day, with over 1,000 chapters and 100 volumes to its name. An anime adaptation premiered in 1999 and is similarly still ongoing, with over 1,000 episodes under its belt. The first of now 15 One Piece films premiered in Japan in 2000. Additionally, a live-action television series based on Oda’s manga is currently in the works for Netflix.

The manga and anime center on Monkey D. Luffy, a young man with a body made of rubber who has aspirations of becoming “King of the Pirates.” Luffy leads the Straw Hat Pirates as they explore the Grand Line in search of the mythical treasure known as “One Piece.” Luffy’s original crew consisted of swordsman Roronoa Zoro, thief Nami, sniper Usopp and chef Sanji, with more characters joining fray over the course of the series.
