With well over 100 members, forming 22 different teams, the Power Rangers franchise offers a relatively diverse cast, though some members come off in a far better light than others. While the series is host to more than a few uninteresting, sometimes even offensive, characters, some have formed enduring, loyal fandoms.
There may not be an ideal Power Ranger, but some seem to transcend the material. Despite being cobbled together from international material and primarily written for a young audience, some Rangers deliver compelling performances and storylines, even when sharing scenes with less-liked characters.
10/10 Doggie Kruger Goes From Strict Mentor To Ultimate Warrior
Power Rangers S.P.D. quickly distinguished itself from other Ranger teams through its strict command structure. Though another series, Time Force, was similar, the Ranger team there is separated from their organization’s oversight. In the case of S.P.D., however, the team’s commander, Anubis “Doggie” Kruger, is very much present from the beginning.
Though he starts off a dower, strict leader motivated by regret and revenge, Kruger manages to change everything in one of the franchise’s most impressive shows of force. Kruger morphs into one of the series’ extra rangers, the S.P.D. Shadow Ranger, who wields a unique and deadly saber in his pursuit of Justice. This turn quickly made Kruger a uniquely effective mentor.
9/10 Adam Is A Welcome And Loyal Ally
Adam Park, originally the second Black Ranger from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, is one of the rare examples of Rangers who served in multiple colors on multiple teams without ever being the leader. While the Red Ranger usually garners the series’ focus, Adam is a steady hand, ready to support his team.
In his years as a Ranger, Adam has taken a few roles, such as the funny one, and in Turbo, he was often a confidant for the far younger Justin. While Adam may not be the most exciting Ranger, nor strongest, he represents a dedication to the cause that fans have long admired.
8/10 Billy Is The True Strength Of The Mighty Morphin Team
Power Rangers teams often have highly compartmentalized roles based on members’ personalities and skills. In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Billy may not be the strongest combatant, but he is their most effective member.
As a scientific genius, Billy often presented the ultimate solution to the week’s villain. Whether through the reprogramming of a villain’s device or the expansion of one of his own ideas, Billy does more to fight evil during his time as the Blue Ranger than any other. Even after losing his powers, Billy doesn’t abandon the fight, transitioning to a full-time support role, focusing on his talents.
7/10 Eric Shows The Value Of Hard Work
Eric Myers begins his story in Power Rangers Time Force as the childhood friend/rival to the series’ Red Ranger, Wes. He soon gains the power of the Quantum Ranger, establishing himself as separate from the Time Force organization, though they often work together.
Eric is the opposite of Wes in almost every way. While Wes is friendly and outgoing, Eric is hardworking and focused. Wes, raised in an ultra-wealthy household, has a bright, almost childlike view of the world, but Eric knows much better. Eric shows how hard work is not only a way to better one’s life; it’s a way to better oneself.
6/10 Jason Is The Franchise’s Original Leader
When Zordon gathers local teens to fight his war against Rita Repulsa and her forces of evil, he chooses Jason Lee Scott, the original Red Ranger, to be the leader of this team. Jason is known for his extreme martial arts skills and kind heart.
Jason may not be as flashy as later Ranger leaders, but his leadership skills are more than strong enough to lead his team in defeating the ancient space witch. His most honorable moment comes when he steps down from his command position for the new White Ranger, which he does with grace and respect. Jason is all about the team, which fuels fans’ respect.
5/10 Cam Lives Out Every Nerd’s Dream
The tech consultant is a long-existing position in the Power Rangers support staff, and few have as good a storyline as Power Rangers Ninja Storm’s Cam Watanabe. He begins the series as the son of the team’s master, who is usually upset with the Rangers’ lack of forethought and respect for his work.
Eventually, Cam’s whole role shifts when he gains the powers of the Samurai as the Green Samurai Ranger. Cam starts the series jealous due to the limitations of his role and ends up the team’s greatest member. His story, which has a clear appeal, is pure wish fulfillment, where he manages to rebel against his father’s wishes and exceed all expectations of himself.
4/10 Andros Is Both Guide And An Outsider
Andros, the Red Space Ranger, has an odd role in the series. As an alien from the planet KO-35, he displays telekinetic abilities while having a completely human appearance, allowing the Space Ranger’s leader to integrate into Earth society in his journeys effectively.
Andros’s role is complicated because while he is a complete novice at Earth culture, he is the Rangers’ point-of-contact with the rest of the universe. Andros’ exact characterization fluctuates throughout the series, sometimes a comedic fish out of water, and other times a skilled commander fighting a guerrilla war against Evil. His uncertainty on Earth only leads to him being a more approachable leader.
3/10 Kendrix Makes The Ultimate Sacrifice
The Power Rangers may be heroes who fight for good against evil, but few give as much of themselves to the fight as Kendrix Morgan, the original Pink Galaxy Ranger, does. Due to her actor’s leukemia diagnosis, the character was written out and replaced, but was given an excellent sendoff.
While facing Psycho Pink, one of the franchise’s most enduring villains, Kendrix sacrifices her own life to save Cassie, the Pink Space Ranger, and Terra Venture, the series’ setting. Most departing Rangers leave to continue the fight for good in other arenas, but instead, Kendrix teaches a lesson about sacrifice, a rarity in Power Rangers.
2/10 Jen Is The True Leader Of The Time Force
Most Power Rangers teams are led by their respective Red Rangers. However, this constant is broken in Time Force, where the leader is clearly Jen Scotts, the Pink Ranger. Though Wes, the Red Ranger, occupies the center of most storylines, Jen calls the shots.
There are few leaders in the Power Rangers canon as effective as Jen, and her role frequently puts her into conflict with the irresponsible Wes. Jen speaks to all those who are gifted leaders, even if they aren’t the most popular. She may not be great at communicating her emotions, but Jen is a fiercely loyal Ranger, and the mind behind their victory.
1/10 Tommy Is The Elder Statesman Of Power Rangers
There is no argument about who the greatest Power Ranger is. Between five positions on four teams, Tommy Oliver has put more hours into his tenure as a Ranger than anyone.
As the Green Dragon Ranger, Tommy broke his brainwashing and decided to fight for good. He led the team as the White Tiger Ranger and the Red Rangers of both Zeo and Turbo. Finally, as the Black Dino Ranger, Tommy returned to serve as both ally and mentor to the Dino Thunder team. Tommy offers a form of continuity rarely present in Power Rangers by defining it for one generation and delivering it to the next.
