Another Game of Thrones spinoff series is coming to HBO, this time to tell the story of Aegon’s Conquest.

According to Variety, executives at HBO are exploring the possibility of another spinoff after the success of House of the Dragon, but one that will instead explore the conquest of Westeros led by Aegon I Targaryen. Sources report that the project is in its earliest stages and HBO is in the process of searching for writers to lead the project so as to begin development. At the time of writing, no writers are attached to the series. In addition, though no plans are official, HBO and Warner Bros. are considering green-lighting a feature film that will likely precede the rest of the series.

Aegon’s Conquest refers to the “War of Conquest” mentioned throughout both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon — HBO’s ongoing Game of Thrones prequel, and so far the only Game of Thrones spinoff to have aired. While House of the Dragon takes place nearly 200 years before the events of the original series, the Aegon’s Conquest prequel would instead take place approximately 300 years before Game of Thrones, which is when Aegon’s Conquest occurred. HBO has not yet commented on the prequel series.

Who Is Aegon the Conqueror?

Aegon I Targaryen is the great-great-grandfather of Viserys I Targaryen, portrayed by Paddy Considine in House of the Dragon, and led the campaign to conquer Westeros a century prior to Viserys’s reign. Aegon served as the namesake for many future Targaryens and is known best as Aegon the Conquerer, becoming the first of his name to serve as King until his death. Aegon had two children from two wives — both of whom were also his sisters. In addition, like many other Targaryens, Aegon was known for his use of dragons in his campaign, meaning that the mythical beasts are likely to appear should the series be green-lit by HBO.

HBO’s Game of Thrones was based on author George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire book series, while House of the Dragon was based on his 2018 novel, Fire & Blood. However, there is no standalone book that tells the story of Aegon’s Conquest. It is unknown if Martin, who is currently working on House of the Dragon Season 2, would be attached to the new prequel.

In December 2022, Martin noted that more than one Game of Thrones spinoff had been shelved as a result of ongoing shakeups at HBO Max. At the time, Martin noted that he was “working on so many bloody things,” which included “several of the other successor shows that we’re developing with HBO.”

He added, “Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead.” HBO commissioned five individual spinoff series in 2017 just before Game of Thrones concluded its eight-season run.

House of the Dragon Season 1 is available to stream on HBO Max.
