Black Adam Arrives on HBO Max in Time for Christmas

Warner Bros. and DC Films’ Black Adam will soon make its streaming debut.

HBO Max officially announced that Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam will premiere on the streaming service on Dec. 16, just in time for the holiday season. The film was released in theaters on Oct. 21.

Starring Johnson in the title role, Black Adam is a spinoff of 2019’s Shazam! and marked the DC Extended Universe debut of the JSA (Justice Society of America), which consisted of Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Pierce Brosnan as Doctor. Fate, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Sarah Shahi as Adrianna Tomaz and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Johnson has repeatedly stated that Black Adam would mark a “new era” for the DCEU, with the DC film marking the return of Henry Cavill’s Superman in a post-credits scene. However, the future of Black Adam in the newly refurbished DCU remains unclear despite Johnson’s enthusiasm, as industry experts reportedly claim that a sequel to the film is unlikely based on its box office returns.

Black Adam’s Box Office Performance

Overall, Black Adam has earned nearly $400 million at the worldwide box office, though recent reports stated the superhero film is poised to lose Warner Bros. Discovery around $100 million. However, Johnson refuted these claims, comparing Black Adam’s earnings to those of Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The First Avenger, which pulled $370 million.

On its opening weekend, Black Adam soared to the top of the domestic box office, earning $67 million USD in its debut, surpassing projections that the film would reach $62 million after it opened across 4,350 North American theaters. While these earnings align with previous DCEU films (2018’s Aquaman earned a domestic cume of $67.8 million), Black Adam surpassed the earnings for Shazam!, which pulled in a domestic total of $53.5 million in its opening weekend.

Black Adam earned $73 million across 76 markets in its international opening and crossed the $250 million worldwide box office threshold after ten days in theaters, making for a current worldwide total of $140 million. “As a spin-off, this is a strong opening,” said David A. Gross, the head of Franchise Entertainment Research. “Black Adam should do well abroad and be comfortably profitable.” Black Adam’s opening night alone earned $7.6 million in Thursday night previews, marking one of the best opening nights for its star. Industry sources claim that if the film had surpassed $68 million in its first weekend, it would be Johnson’s best solo opening of his career.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam is now in theaters.
