Tartarus is considered the most fortified prison in My Hero Academia. It is where society’s worst criminals are kept and it has such elaborate defensive measures that even thinking about activating one’s ability will result in instant death. MHA villains have speculated that not even Gigantomachia or All Might could breach it.
However, All For One demonstrated that the bastion was not completely impregnable. With enough planning or brute force, even a fortress as well-defended as Tartarus can be breached and escaped from. Whether through cunning, resilience, or sheer might, other powerful anime villains could potentially break into (or out of) Tartarus as well.
10 Madara (Naruto)
The greatest condition of Tartarus was that those who attempted to activate their powers were shot immediately. However, considering that Naruto‘s Madara was capable of having half his head obliterated by Might Guy, such injuries would be trivial in comparison.
Moreover, Madara’s Susanoo would grant him the brute strength he needs to run through Tartarus’ defenses and carve a path to freedom. Alternatively, his truthseeking orbs are deadly against inanimate objects and living opponents alike. Madara would be able to brave the Tartarus’s defenses and push on through with a brutal counter attack.
9 Meruem (Hunter X Hunter)
Meruem quickly established himself as the deadliest menace in Hunter X Hunter. He is capable of shredding Netero’s limbs and moving faster than the eye could see, so dodging bullets would be fairly trivial for him.
Since not even the Guanyin Bodhisattva in its enhanced state could harm Meruem, Tartarus’ heavy guns would be little use in thwarting the Chimera Ants’ escape. Given that Tartarus’s defenses rely on technology rather than Quirk users, they wouldn’t have the raw stopping power necessary to prevent the Ant King from clawing his way to freedom and resuming his place in the NGL.
8 Adam Smasher (Cyberpunk: Edgerunners)
Given that none of the pros are familiar with Cyberpunk: Edgeunners’ level of technology, they could never be certain whether or not Adam’s suit is turned off. Smasher’s heavy guns were capable of obliterating large buildings, so he’d be able to rip through Tartarus without much issue. Tartarus’ defenses may be tough, but Smasher has the firepower to obliterate them using missiles.
Since Smasher has a Sandevistan capable of keeping up with David, he should be able to dodge the turrets that would lock onto him as soon as he began planning his escape. So long as Smasher hijacks a car or helicopter, he would make his getaway before reinforcements could arrive.
7 Akainu (One Piece)
One Piece‘s Akainu has the perfect counter for Tartarus’ defense systems. His lava-based Devil Fruit means that he could melt through his restraints and that the turrets unleashed upon him wouldn’t have any effect. In the absence of Sea Prism Stone and Aizawa’s presence, nothing in Tartarus is capable of preventing Akainu’s escape.
What makes the Fleet Admiral’s success most likely is the raw scope of his abilities. Considering his battle against Aokiji permanently terraformed Punk Hazard into a wasteland, he has the caliber necessary to quickly navigate Tartarus and fly to freedom.
6 Nnoitra (Bleach)
Nnoitra’s Hierro was the toughest of any Bleach villain. He had superhuman durability, even by Espada standards, and could easily shrug off attacks from heavy guns. With the physical brawn to contend with Kenpachi Zaraki, a single stroke from Nnoitra could devastate large swathes of land.
This means that Nnoitra would be able to break through Tartarus’ blast doors even if his weapon had been confiscated. In lieu of physical strength, Nnoitra may also procure his escape using a series of well-placed Ceros.
5 Kuvira (Legend Of Korra)
Legend Of Korra’s Kuvira would use her oppressive surroundings to her advantage if she found herself imprisoned in Tartarus. Given that she had the reflexes to defeat Korra (who herself overcame Amon, a man capable of dodging bullets), she would be able to avoid the initial turret fire while metalbending them into rubble.
Next, Kuvira would unravel the heavy blast doors and those of the other inmates. Given the woman’s impressive leadership skills, it would be trivial for her to incite a riot as its sole leader. Most of Tartarus’ prisoners are just looking for an excuse to cause mayhem and would gladly align with the architect of their freedom.
4 Spec (Baki)
Baki’s Spec has several superhuman qualities that would enable his escape. Given that he survived shooting himself multiple times in the head at point-blank range, resisting Tartarus’ turret fire is easily within his capabilities.
Rather than attempting to escape upward, Spec would need to rip open the walls of the prison and swim to freedom. Given that he escaped an underwater fortress using this exact method, Spec’s body is resilient enough to survive the immense water pressure such a risky maneuver might inflict against him. While Spec technically doesn’t have powers, his physical prowess is unmatched.
3 DIO (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)
DIO has more options for escaping than any other JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure villain. Using the World’s power would provide the window he needs to break his restraints before the automated turrets could shoot him.
Even if he was struck first, DIO‘s vampiric rapid healing would ensure that the damage dealt to his body would be minimal. Given how DIO casually threw around large vehicles and matched Star Platinum’s strength, crushing the blast doors in his path would be trivial.
2 Kaido (One Piece)
Kaido was known as the King Of The Beasts and an unrealistically deadly villain. His skin proved so tough that not even the most hardened warriors could breach it, let alone deal meaningful damage against him. This means that the automated turrets focused on keeping Kaido in place would be virtually worthless.
With enough raw strength to throw opponents miles with a single hit, the blast doors could not even slow Kaido down. His dragon form would ensure a clean escape provided he isn’t interested in staying behind to dispatch the heroes attempting to stop him.
1 All For One (My Hero Academia)
All For One was the first person to successfully escape from Tartarus. Given his dying body and restriction from the outside world, his escape proved difficult yet nonetheless impressive. By corrupting Shigaraki’s body in advance, All For One used him to disable Tartarus’ power.
With the turrets removed and other prisoners unleashed, it allowed the villain to make his escape and declare him the next Demon Lord with almost no resistance. In the end, All For One illustrated how cunning was just as sufficient for escaping My Hero Academia‘s most notorious prison as brute force could be.
