With the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 releasing at CCXP 2022, fan reactions are mixed when it comes to the look of Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock.
The trailer gave the first look at the character, with Poulter briefly appearing towards the end in what appeared to be a fight with Karen Gillan’s Nebula. While speculation as to the character’s design has been thrown around social media in the months following the character’s casting, many fans are pleased with how he’s depicted in Vol. 3. Despite these positive reactions, others are disappointed that he looks too “normal.”
Bringing the character to life is no easy task, with Adam being brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be the perfect form of retaliation by The Sovereign after The Guardians embarrassed their people during the battle against Ego. Director James Gunn has said this version will be a “fresh” take on the character, adding that audiences are going to “appreciate Adam Warlock.” Fans of Poulter’s appearance called the design perfect, with many of those dissatisfied including images of Warlock from the trailer alongside the character’s depiction in the comics and in animated form.
As for Poulter, the actor has stated that he’s put in plenty of extra work to bring Adam Warlock to life. In an interview earlier in early 2022, Poulter broke down the diet and workout routine he was on to portray Warlock. “It means not particularly civilized at times. Quantities of food you wouldn’t necessarily want to ingest,” Poulter said. Eating may not even be the hardest part for the actor as well. “The whole social side of your life has to take a back seat,” he added. “I’m in a routine that is so rigid that being able to go out for dinner with friends is not something I’ve been able to do. I’m looking forward to being able to again.”
It remains to be seen if fans of the character will grow to love Poulter’s Warlock as more footage is shown leading up to the film’s release. Earlier this year, Poulter himself said he was hopeful the character would be a part of the MCU past Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. “I really hope so, dude. You know, I don’t honestly know what the plan is, I mean that is, hand on heart, you know the truth.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to open in theaters on May 5, 2023, as part of Phase 5 of the MCU.
