Zack Snyder has spoken up about rumors of him coming back to DC, and gave a blunt response to those who want him to continue the Snyderverse.
The DC Extended Universe, popularly known as DCEU, began with Snyder directing Man of Steel in 2013. Since then, the filmmaker went on to make two more movies in the franchise. However, in 2017, Snyder was replaced by Joss Whedon during Justice League’s reshoots and was never considered for further projects. His DCEU journey ended with a director’s cut of Justice League releasing in 2021, and it looks like the filmmaker has moved on from the comicbook world.

Speaking in an interview with The Atlantic, the Rebel Moon filmmaker gave a pretty straightforward answer to a possible DC returns. The director noted that he is not running after James Gunn in order to direct a new DC movie, making it clear that he is going to work on creating new IPs that are “cool.” Snyder said, “I’m not knocking on James Gunn’s door, going, like, ‘Bro, shoot me one of those sweet movies. The holy grail is some original IP that you create, that has resonance and is cool.”
Snyder’s fans have been wanting the director to make live-action comicbook adaptations. His fandom is once again running a campaign on social media and requesting Netflix to give him a chance to continue the Snyderverse. The filmmaker took the world by storm with Man of Steel and earned a lot of praise for his directing skills. Even though critics had mixed reactions about the film, fans were utterly delighted with the way he re-introduced Superman to the world. However, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice turned out to be a massive critical failure. Although it earned more than $873 million globally, the movie could only manage to earn a 29% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 2021 turned out to be the last fans got to see Snyder helming a DCEU film and ended his reign on a high.
Gunn is starting afresh the newly announced DC Universe, it’s highly unlikely that Snyder will be making a comeback. In fact, the director’s recent statements, following the release of Rebel Moon, show that he has already made up his mind to move away from DC. With a sequel for Rebel Moon set to come out in April 2024, Snyder might now have the creative freedom he didn’t get in the DCEU. With that being said, his fandom would never miss a chance to root for him if he ever wishes to direct a superhero film.
Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon is currently streaming on Netflix.
