Minor spoilers ahead for X-Men ’97!
8 Gambit
Kinetically Charges Objects
Gambit is known more for his suave personality and flirtatious attitude towards Rogue, but that doesn’t mean he’s not an extremely powerful Mutant. Gambit displays some incredible power within his time in X-Men ’97, and although the displays of his powers are brief, they are extremely memorable in execution.
Gambit can kinetically charge objects, providing them with a glowing purple hue before they explode. This was used a few times in the show to cause great damage to those who need it, but the most important display of this power was against a Tri-Sentinel, where he was able to charge the entire thing and blow it up.
7 Wolverine
Adamantium Skeleton & Claws With An Amazing Healing Factor
Wolverine is often described as the best there is at what he does, and he definitely proves just that more than once throughout X-Men ’97. Whilst the show has him take a backseat, it’s impossible to deny that he has his moments. Wolverine is seen slashing through Prime Sentinels with ease thanks to his adamantium claws and bounces back from their attacks due to his skeleton being bound by adamantium and the impressive healing factor.
Wolverine is a few centuries old thanks to his healing factor, and in that time, Wolverine’s been involved in a lot of wars, thus he’s not afraid to do what others are not, whether that’s slashing someone or outright killing them, Wolverine will always do the dirty work, even if others hate him for it.
6 Sunspot
Pure Solar Energy
Whilst Roberto keeps his mutant powers a secret for the majority of X-Men ’97, and he rarely practices them out of fear of being an outcast, his powers as Sunspot make him a valued asset, but one who lacks the training to be one of the best.
Sunspot’s power of transforming into pure solar energy gives him great strength and the ability to fly, as well as set the world on fire if he truly wanted to, but his inexperience with his powers holds him back, as does his fear of being a mutant, but that doesn’t mean he won’t fight for his friends, as he took to space just to lay hands on Bastion without fear.
5 Rogue
Absorbs Powers Through Skin Contact, & Has Ms. Marvel’s Power Set
Rogue is easily one of the strongest X-Men out there, and as a southern belle, she’s certainly not afraid to punch those she disagrees with. Rogue has a unique advantage over others due to the fact that she can absorb someone’s powers through skin contact. However, whilst this makes her intensely powerful by stealing the powers of others, it makes her vulnerable, as she cannot touch those she loves.
Rogue demonstrates her power multiple times, and the fact that she can fly, has super strength, and incredible durability due to her theft of Ms. Marvel’s powers, proves that it’s best not to get in her way, as she can easily take on the army, Captain America, and any Sentinel that dares hurt her and her friends.
4 Storm
Can Manipulate the Weather
The calmest and most reasonable member of the X-Men, Storm rarely lets her emotions get in the way of peaceful resolve. Yet, all that she knew was threatened when her powers were stolen by her by the Friends of Humanity, leaving her in a confused and scared state as to what she is without her Mutant powers.
Once again, Storm proved she was an Omega-level Mutant, as she was able to regain her powers, despite the supposed fact that the loss was to be permanent. Storm can harness the elements themselves and control the weather, providing land with rain, ice, lightning, and more.
3 Bastion
Technokinetic Who Can Manipulate & Integrate With Machines
Bastion’s introduction as the surprise antagonist for X-Men ’97 shocked audiences and the Mutants who would see genocide at his hand. Bastion was created as a human-Sentinel hybrid, and his plans to eradicate mutantkind and rid the world of tolerance is one that must be stopped at all costs.
Bastion’s goals are sinister, and his ambitions are just as evil as his powers. Bastion can better himself through technology, and it’s not hard for him to use his genius and his technokinesis to amass an arsenal of Prime Sentinels, and manipulate his body to be more durable and stronger, besting the X-Men with brute and unrelenting strength from the future itself.
2 Jean Grey
Telekinesis Imbued With The Phoenix Force
A more gentle soul, Jean Grey uses her powers to follow Charles Xavier’s dream of a world where mutants and humanity work together. Yet, that dream is often threatened, and Jean is forced to use her powers of telepathy and telekinesis to defend herself and her allies. She may be a strong telepath, but she holds back far too much, which is why the Phoenix inside her is the brutality that makes her so immensely strong and powerful.
The cosmic energy of the Phoenix is within Jean Grey, and she is able to harness it unconsciously, like a defense mechanism to damage all those that threaten the ones she loves. With the Phoenix Force harnessed, Jean Grey goes beyond a mere Omega-level mutant, and she can easily rip the DNA from a Mutant, and reduce them to ash if she wills it as a dark force.
1 Magneto
Master of Magnetism & Metals
Magneto is a complex character, one who is often justified in his attitude, but never his actions. Magneto will happily see mankind crumble beneath him, observing them as genetic inferiors, and monsters for their lack of sympathy and constant attempt at bigotry and murder of mutantkind. As such, Magneto will bend the world to his whim, to his version of apocalypse, if he is pushed to that extreme.
Magneto can make the world truly bend to him due to his powers with magnets and metals, where he proved his power by shutting down electricity around the world. Thousands were killed by the absence of technology in hospitals, and his manipulation of Earth’s magnetic field could easily see the end of the world. Without a team of X-Men to put Magneto in his place, this powerful mutant could easily fulfill his evil dream.
