Highlights
- Wednesday Season 2 needs to address the lackluster romantic storyline and filler episodes from Season 1 for a stronger plot.
- Jenna Ortega advocates for Wednesday to remain single in Season 2, maintaining the strong, independent character of Wednesday Addams.
- Wednesday Season 2 should focus on solving mysteries at Nevermore Academy without unnecessary filler scenes or distractions from the main plot.
In the fall of 2022, the latest Netflix obsession was the Addams Family spin-off Wednesday. Jenna Ortega plays the main character, spunky teenager Wednesday Addams who is attending Nevermore Academy. While there is a lot to enjoy about the TV series and there’s a reason why there is a Wednesday spin-off about Uncle Fester in the works, there are a few lackluster aspects about season 1.
According to Digital Spy, the cast and crew of Wednesday started filming season 2 in May 2024. Unfortunately, fans won’t get the chance to see what the Goth teen is up to until 2025 as that is the anticipated release date. That gives fans plenty of time to reflect on season 1’s eight episodes and think about what the next season should look like. When Wednesday
comes back for season 2, there are some problems that it needs to solve.
What Wednesday Season 1 Problems Does Season 2 Need To Address?
There are two main problems with Wednesday season 1:Wednesday’s romantic storyline with Hunter Doohan’s Tyler Galpin and Wednesday season 1 felt too long with some filler episodes.
Jenna Ortega wanted changes made to Wednesday season 1 because she didn’t feel that the iconic Addams Family character would behave the way the script outlined. Wednesday season 2 should fix a big season 1 problem by ensuring that Wednesday is single and doesn’t enter a romantic relationship. It doesn’t ring true that Wednesday Addams would care about dating when she has always been strong, independent, and fine on her own.
Wednesday investigating the Hyde Monster made sense for the character and felt like enough of a storyline. She didn’t need to explore her feelings for Tyler. While the Wednesday season 1 dance scene is now famous and it was impressive watching Jenna Ortega’s moves, she could have easily attended the dance alone.

As Ortega said on Dax Shepherd’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, according to The Huffington Post, she thought carefully about how she should portray Wednesday. She said:
“I grew very, very protective of her. You can’t lead a story and have no emotional arc because then it’s boring and nobody likes you.”
She added:
“I would have to go and explain why I couldn’t go do certain things.”
Wednesday season 2 should also feel more complete without any filler. While there were only eight episodes in season 1, there were a few times when the story went off track, including when Wednesday visited a counselor. These were dull scenes to watch that didn’t need to be included. Episode 5, “You Reap What You Woe,” which focused on Gomez’s past at Nevermore Academy, was also less compelling than the others. IfWednesday season 2 can focus on the action without lagging, it will be a strong group of episodes.
While fans will have to wait until Wednesday season 2 to see what the main plot will be, it was clear from the end of Wednesday season 1 that Wednesday season 2 has to answer certain questions. One of these is who is sending Wednesday creepy text messages. Creators Miles Millar and Al Gough did speak to The Hollywood Reporter and give some hints about what’s to come. Millar mentioned that Wednesday season 2 will follow a different mystery.
Millar said:
“It’s always about feeling that the season, because there’s only eight episodes, it feels like a book, so it feels complete and really satisfying. When you reach the end of a series, you wanna feel satisfied that the story is told.”
He continued:
“It’s about tying up those loose ends, and then you want expectations and cliffhangers for questions for the next season but really wrapping this mystery up, so we can really begin with a whole new mystery next season.”
Hopefully, as Wednesday investigates a different problem at Nevermore Academy, Wednesday season 2 will focus on the character’s inner world and investigative abilities and not her dating life.
