Cosplay is one of the biggest fan hobbies out there, and spans across genres. Fans of anime, video games, movies, TV shows, books, and more enjoy dressing up as their favorite characters, taking photos, and hanging out with friends. The world of cosplay is always adapting and changing as technology advances, and this time, an exciting new tech has been announced that could be a big deal for cosplayers of all types.
This new technology will allow cosplayers to create a 3D model of themselves, wearing their cosplay. The announcement came from Japanese company KDDI, the parent company of the cell phone company AU. While the technology is still in a trial phase at the moment, it is definitely an exciting possibility, and as it is perfected, may open up new opportunities for cosplayers to share their work digitally.
According to the press release, this 3D model technology will be able to scan a cosplayer while wearing their outfit, and output a 3D model of them that can be used and shared via their cell phone. The cosplayer simply steps into the scanning device, which scans them from all angles, and then the model is created to be viewed via a cell phone browser. They can also add in movements and animations, and the model can be viewed in 360 degrees from all angles.
Another feature that will be of interest to cosplayers is that the background of the 3D model is transparent. That means you can put your model into any setting that you want, which brings a whole new level to cosplay photography. Cosplayers can place themselves right into the setting of the media they are cosplaying from, and don’t even need advanced Photoshop skills to do so. Then, the images can be shared on social media.
A really exciting possibility that opens up is that cosplayers who don’t have advanced skills will still be able to have their dream photoshoot using this technology. Plus, they are able to manipulate their own 3D model whenever they want, changing the angle of the shot or which side it was taken from, which can help eliminate post-photoshoot regrets if they are unhappy with something or wish they could change something. Do you wish you could see your amazing weapon better? Show a better side of your wig? You can do whatever you want with this 3D model.
For now, this technology is still new and limited to Japan. It was already trialed at Comic Market 103, which took place on the last two days of December, where cosplayers were able to make use of the 3D scanner for free. KDDI plans to continue to expand on this new opportunity, including using it for theme parks or other memorable occasions (like weddings) in the future. Hopefully, the tech will find its way internationally as well, because this could be a great advancement for cosplayers everywhere.
