Game Rant can exclusively reveal a clip from The Painter, an edge-of-your-seat thriller that will be available to buy digitally on January 9th. The film follows an ex-CIA operative who is dragged back into the murky underworld he left behind once a mysterious woman reenters his life. After realizing that he’s in the crosshairs of a rogue black ops program, the former intelligence officer must rely on old skills to outwit and outkill those who wish him dead.

The Painter released in select theaters on January 5th and stars Charlie Weber (How to Get Away with Murder), Madison Bailey (Outer Banks), and Academy Award winner Jon Voight (Coming Home). The movie is directed by former stuntman and actor Kimani Ray Smith, who has worked as a director on other projects like the Van Helsing TV series, Horror Noire, and Suffer.

The Painter features action scenes that pit the titular character, Peter, against ruthless government hit squads, and the viewer gets to witness the ex-CIA operative as he dispatches these individuals with lethal creativity. Its fluid action scenes are likely thanks to the director’s background, and fans of movies like John Wick might enjoy this brutal action thriller. The exclusive clip shared with Game Rant shows the aftermath of one of these gunfights, as one of the film’s villains inspects the scene.

The Painter Digital Release Date

In the clip, one of the movie’s antagonists, Ghost, wonders, “What were you thinking, sending a bunch of jarheads to take out The Painter?” The ex-intelligence-operative-turned-artist seems to command respect within the film’s intelligence community despite retiring years ago, even among particularly lethal individuals like Ghost. After Peter left behind the world of espionage due to a traumatic event, he retreated to a small town in Oregon where he took up painting, preferring to avoid his fellow townspeople.

What were you thinking, sending a bunch of jarheads to take out The Painter?

“I always thought the name was a metaphor, you know, like the artistry aspect. That he’s so good, he makes works of art, but with killing people,” muses Ghost in the clip. Peter’s codename, The Painter, was given to him while he was still an active agent, and the viewer will find out for themselves whether Peter’s actions in the movie are reminiscent of an artist’s.

For those who are curious, The Painter sits at a balanced runtime of 97 minutes. Movie fans can purchase The Painter digitally or see it in select theaters.
