The Last of Us season 2 is no longer held back by the actors’ strike. However, there is still one major hurdle for the show to contend with before work can get underway on its highly anticipated second season.
The Last of Us is based on the highly acclaimed PlayStation exclusive game series. The series chronicles a post-apocalyptic exodus across the US by Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with getting a young girl named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to her destination. The Last of Us series could also impact the video game franchise as the former heads towards a second season and possibly beyond.

Pascal has starred in many great movies and series and is in high demand around town, a fact that might have a downside for some of his fans post-strike. In a recent report from Deadline, it was revealed that leading man Pascal’s primary focus right now is on the Gladiator sequel, which is in first position for him and means that every other project the star has signed on to afterward will have to be delayed or work around the production of the sequel film. Unfortunately for The Last of Us fans, the show’s second season is also subject to this order of priorities and won’t do any filming for a while.
This is particularly unfortunate as The Last of Us season 2 received a disappointing update when it was announced that filming wouldn’t kick off until 2024 due to the confluence of factors headed by the double strike of writers and actors. With that timeline, the season’s release was already set for 2025 at the earliest, and now conflicts with the Gladiator sequel could potentially make that time frame even further down than it already got pushed. Gladiator 2, which has filmmaker Ridley Scott at the helm, was also previously set for a 2024 release, a goal the production might still try to reach.
It’s not a big surprise that the Last of Us star would have conflicts in his schedule, as many people would say Pascal is the ultimate franchise actor, having had prominent roles in Game of Thrones, Star Wars, Kingsman, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Law & Order, and many more popular franchises that could individually make a star popular. With so many well-received performances in so many prominent properties, it would be more perplexing if he didn’t find himself in a bind now that the SAG-AFTRA strike has concluded.
It seems delays are par for the course these days, even without the need for an industry-wide strike, as fans saw when Gladiator 2 started facing issues after a stunt gone wrong before there were any external hiccups to worry about. Despite this, fans can be rest assured that The Last of Us will get its second season as soon as possible.
The Last of Us is currently available for streaming on Max.
