After the events of the second season of That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime, Rimuru Tempest attains True Demon Lord status, and becomes one of the Ten Demon Lords in the Slimeverse when he kills Clayman during Walpurgis. Due to rearrangements in the structure of this group, the roundtable of Demon Lords saw its number of members reduced from ten to eight, prompting a whole new reason for their conference: to come up with a new name for them as a collective.
To Rimuru’s dismay, the last time the Demon Lords convened for the sake of nomenclature, they argued about it for about three months. However, Rimuru’s allies who were present at Walpurgis had immense confidence that their master would be able to come up with a great new name for the Demon Lords, prompting him to come up with the name “Octagram”. What is Octagram, exactly, and why was that such a fitting name?
And Then There Were Eight
The Nomenclature Behind “Octagram”
After Rimuru applied the Megiddo technique to eliminate the forces of Falmuth and the Western Holy Church advancing towards Tempest, he underwent a metamorphosis that effectively enabled his evolution into a being far more powerful than ever before: a True Demon Lord. As such, Rimuru attended the special meeting of Demon Lords, Walpurgis, in order to take down Clayman, who had orchestrated the attack on Tempest behind the scenes. After defeating Clayman, Rimuru’s place among the Demon Lords was confirmed; however, Demon Lords Carrion and Frey stepped down from their positions to serve under Demon Lord Milim, who had seemingly been under Clayman’s influence but was actually acting in support of her good friend Rimuru.
Now, with the ten reduced to eight, they could no longer be referred to as the “Ten Great Demon Lords”. Rimuru’s allies, most of whom he’d named himself, were certain that there was no individual present who’d be capable of coming up with a better title. Rimuru takes some time to think as he looks up at the starry ceiling, which has a constellation with a number of stars that corresponds with the number of Demon Lords.
From that, he came up with the title, “The Eight-Star Demon Lords – Octagram”, which bears the prefix “octa-“, which we know to mean “eight” (even in the context of October, the tenth month which was once the eighth prior to the addition of January and February), followed by “gram”, which comes from the Greek “gramma“, which refers to that which is written or drawn. It comes up in words like “Tetragrammaton“, or more infamously, the pentagram. Used as a symbol in magic or the occult throughout history, the pentagram has had various meanings across religious contexts and eras, but is famously known in the modern day as a symbol of Satan, the personification of evil in Abrahamic faiths.
As a testament to its universality and varied meaning, the pentagram is also the symbol of the Baháʼí faith, as well as neo-Pagan religions like Wicca, where it represents the five elements. So “Octagram” invokes the same idea of a magic or occult symbol, but instead of five, this is an eight-pointed star. The obvious prevalence of the pentagram in demonology and as a symbol of the devil is also invoked here because they are Demon Lords.
Members of Octagram
The Eight-Star Demon Lords
Each member of Octagram has an assigned seat, as well as a title that corresponds to their specific circumstances, as not every single Demon Lord is an actual majin or Daemon. The 1st Seat, Guy Crimson, is also known as “Rouge”, the Primordial of Red, the very first of the Primordials, the oldest and most powerful Daemons who came into existence at the dawn of creation. Most of the others have yet to be explored in depth in the anime, but among them are a Fallen Angel, a Titan, a former Hero, and Lady Luminous Valentine – a High-Blood Vampire. Each Demon Lord has a territory over which they preside, and they do not take kindly to unannounced visits from other Demon Lords. The table below shows each current member of Octagram’s seat, title and one of their several epithets.
