Highlights
- Stranger Things season 5 should focus on core characters, not introduce new ones, to properly wrap up everyone’s journeys.
- Introducing too many new characters could clutter the final season and take away from the main action and beloved characters.
- The addition of Linda Hamilton as a new cast member might be the only exception due to her iconic status and mystery surrounding her character.
While fans have heard a few details about Stranger Things season 5, the last season of the Netflix series remains an exciting mystery. There are some storylines that everyone agrees will happen, such as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and her friends keeping evil away from Hawkins, Indiana for good. It seems that The Party will win against Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). It also seems clear that there will be a time jump and perhaps a different decade. But should the new episodes feature any new characters?
While it’s always fun to meet other residents of Hawkins and Vecna’s introduction was game-changing for the series,
Stranger Things season 5 should focus on the main characters and not introduce new people. While Deadline reported that three actors have been added to the cast, the focal point of the final season should be the others.
Why Stranger Things Season 5 Should Focus On The Core Characters Instead Of New Ones
Stranger Things season 5 needs a focused story so it can properly wrap up everyone’s journeys. If too much screen time is devoted to new people, then that takes storylines away from The Party and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Jim Hopper (David Harbour). Since fans have gotten to know these characters so well and hope that they’re going to be okay after they have experienced more hardship and heartache than most people, they deserve strong plotlines. There is only one more chance to end the show in an engaging and fulfilling way, and focusing on new characters isn’t the way to do that.
Since fans hope to learn more about the Upside Down in Stranger Things season 5, any potential new characters might get trapped there. But viewers want to see Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) continue her confident streak, or Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) become even closer to Steve Harrington (Joe Keery). Fans don’t want to watch a new character getting terrified by the various creatures and hoping that the others will save them if they can’t figure out a way to save themselves. This has been done before, and it doesn’t need to happen again.
Introducing new characters might also make the new episodes feel cluttered, which shouldn’t happen for the last season. As Maya Hawke explained, Stranger Things season 5 has long episodes, and viewers are unsure that they want such supersized episodes once again. Stranger Things season 4 was impressive, but season 5 should have tighter storylines that get wrapped up before the last few moments fans will get to see these beloved characters again.
If Stranger Things season 5 had too many new characters, that might also change the series finale, and that would be a shame. The series finale needs to be even stronger and more well-written than the Stranger Things season 4 ending, which was fun, entertaining, and unforgettable. Fans have been waiting since the show first premiered on Netflix in 2016 to learn how Eleven and her friends are going to fare when facing the last big battle of their lives. It doesn’t make sense to end the series by sharing what happens to a group of new characters.
While there are at least four new characters in Stranger Things season 5, the one that seems the most intriguing is the one played by Linda Hamilton. There are no details about her character and it seems likely that fans will find out more when they watch the new episodes. But whether Stranger Things season 5 is one or two parts, having one new character won’t affect the main action that much. And, of course, since Hamilton is an iconic actor, it will be exciting to see her.
Who Are The Best New Characters From Stranger Things Seasons 1-4?
While Stranger Things season 5 shouldn’t feature new characters, the past four seasons have done a good job of introducing new people and integrating them into The Party. The best Stranger Things new characters include Eddie Munson, Chrissy Cunningham (Grace Van Dien), and Argyle (Eduardo Franco). It’s interesting that these characters are all from Stranger Things season 4.
Both Eddie and Chrissy are crucial players in the fourth season since, through their storylines, viewers realize Vecna’s intense and dangerous powers. Jonathan Byers’s (Charlie Heaton) new friend Argyle is hilarious and takes the show to a goofy and light-hearted place that is sometimes missing. These three new characters felt necessary in Stranger Things season 4, which was big, exciting, and memorable. But when viewers are able to watch the last season, it would be great to make the main characters the focal point and not miss the chance to allow everyone’s journeys to feel truly finished.
