Stranger Things fans might be sad that the award-winning series is approaching a close with the approaching fifth season, and they won’t be getting the chance to work through those mixed emotions anytime soon.

Stranger Things was arguably Netflix’s most impactful show, cementing the service as a must-have for everyone from fans of Dungeons and Dragons to kids who wanted younger protagonists on their screens. The show would be a mainstay over four seasons, and so fans accepted the news that the fifth season would be the final one for Stranger Things with mixed emotions. With high-profile final-season flops like Game of Thrones still fresh in people’s minds, fans are both eager to see how the show ends and hesitant to see the series come to an end.

There’s a plethora of differing opinions on how fans want Stranger Things season 5 to end the series, but according to one of the show’s stars, there’s still a ton of waiting to do before anyone knows what might be coming next. Speaking on a Podcrushed podcast episode available on YouTube, Stranger Things star Maya Hawke, who plays Robin on the hit show, revealed that the final season would likely take at least a year to finish filming, indicating that the process, which began on the 8th of January 2024 following strike-related delays, is only about halfway done at the moment. Additionally, she would also give fans a pretty good reason for the long schedule, saying “We’re making, basically, eight movies… The episodes are very long.

While the series was already pretty much guaranteed to be released in 2025 at the earliest, Hawke’s description of the progress seems to suggest that it won’t be an early release regardless. While the idea of each episode being worked on to cinematic degrees says a lot of good things about the quality, there’s no doubt that such an undertaking will involve a lot of time as well as effort. If many recent projects are anything to go by, reshoots might also eventually be in order and after all that is done, there’s going to be a veritable mountain of post-processing work for the team to get through. There’s a ton of concern amongst fans and critics that Stranger Things season 5 might not be a satisfying ending, and the long wait to disprove or validate the claim isn’t helping. With nothing left to prove but a lot left to lose, the anticipation for the finale will reach a fever pitch long before the season premieres.

As the wait for the fifth installment stretches further forward, fans are still debating how things will go and whether or not the season should be split into two parts. Whatever format the show settles on aside, there’s a ton of pressure on the writers, performers, and everyone else involved to bring the iconic series to a satisfying end.

Stranger Things season 5 doesn’t have a set release date at the time of writing.
