The recent trailer for The Acolyte has prompted some fans to notice a certain casting trend when it comes to new characters in the Star Wars franchise. It turns out another beloved sci-fi series has been lending its talent to a galaxy far, far away.
When a franchise has been running as long as Star Wars while still managing to remain relevant, eventually it begins to bring in stars from all corners of Hollywood and beyond. Remember those stories about the scrapped NSYNC cameo in Attack of the Clones? That was only the beginning. Over the years, this eminent science fantasy juggernaut has borrowed a ton of big names from unexpected places, up to and including Jack Black and Lizzo in a rather infamous episode of The Mandalorian. The fact that people often forget that Christopher Lloyd featured prominently in that same episode shows just how wild the whole thing was.
But one fan on the Star Wars Cantina subreddit recently pointed out that one franchise seems to be the target for fresh talent lately. Now, whether intentional or not, it seems that Star Wars has been grabbing rather eagerly from the actor pool of the Matrix movies. The new trailer for The Acolyte prominently featured Carrie-Anne Moss, well-known as Trinity from The Matrix. But her appearance is actually only the latest in what may be a steadily growing family of Matrix actors making their way into Star Wars.
“Carrie-Ann Moss as a stern, martials arts using Jedi Master is peak casting and probably the thing I’m most interested in for the Acolyte”
The original post made references to two other specific stars aside from Moss, though they’re still super excited to see her in a role that seems tailor made for her. For one, it listed Genevieve O’Reilly who is currently known for her flawless portrayal of Mon Mothma in Andor. But early in her career, she notably appeared in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions as Officer Wirtz. The post also included Jessica Henwick, known for her role as Peg in Glass Onion and Nymeria Sand in Game of Thrones. She appeared as pilot Jessika Pava in Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens before eventually showing up as Bugs in The Matrix Resurrections. That’s already enough for a trend, but it turns out these 3 aren’t the only ones.
Several users pointed out that Matt Doran, who played Mouse in The Matrix, also showed up in a rather infamous appearance as Elan Sleazebaggano in Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones. That’s right, ever since Star Wars fans were first offered death sticks, they’ve been in The Matrix. Funnily enough, that exact same scene also features another Matrix reference, with actress Fiona Johnson appearing in a cameo as a reference to her role as The Lady in Red from the first Matrix film. So maybe this particular trend isn’t just one big coincidence. Nothing ever is.
“Dont forget Fiona Johnson who played the lady in red
as well as making a cameo in Attack of the Clones in a shot which was a direct reference to her appearance in The Matrix
And Matt Doran as Mouse who appeared in AOTC as Elian Sleezebaggano another shot that was adirect reference to the Matrix.”
Moss’ presence in The Acolyte has been known for well over a year at this point, so it’s not like the trend only just became a trend. But now that all the pieces are that much more visible, one can’t help but wonder, who else might join up in the future? “Bring in Hugo Weaving and Lawrence Fishburne or we riot,” offered one fan. Suddenly the idea of Trinity and Morpheus battling Agent Smith with lightsabers has irreversibly lodged itself in the brains of fans everywhere. Oh, the possibilities.
