Star Wars Fans Argue One Character Was Killed Off Way Too Soon

Highlights

  • Fans are upset about the death of Morgan Elsbeth in Ahsoka, believing it happened too soon and wasted her character’s potential.
  • Diana Lee Inosanto’s performance as Morgan Elsbeth was highly praised, and fans felt that her character’s death was a missed opportunity for future seasons or spin-offs.
  • While there is a chance that Morgan Elsbeth could return, her death served an emotional purpose and may be deemed too pivotal to be undercut by a potential return in the future.

Star Wars: Ahsoka fans are reflecting on how the death of Diana Lee Inosanto’s Morgan Elsbeth might have happened far too soon based on the impression and impact the character had.

Star Wars: Ahsoka gave longtime fans of the franchise a long procession of well-received cameos, callbacks, live-action firsts, and the return of exciting characters from other live-action shows. One such return was that of Morgan Elsbeth, the Dathomari witch with unique green Force abilities, a high-profile industrialist, and Nightsister first introduced as The Magistrate in The Mandalorian season 2. Morgan Elsbeth would be a prominent part of Ahsoka‘s first season before meeting her end at the show’s climax, wielding the Blade of Talzin in a losing effort against the show’s titular character in a moment that fans are now calling foul on.

Taking to the massive r/StarWars Reddit board, user WorkersUnited111 created a post aptly titled “They should have never killed off Morgan Elsbeth in Ahsoka,” in which he briefly highlights the world-class pedigree of Diana Lee Inosanto, the star behind the character. In addition to the praise given to Inosanto, who has done stunt work in projects as popular as the oft-creepy Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, and her fight choreography, many respondents in the thread pointed out the sheer waste in killing off a character who had just received a massive boost in power in the form of the Blade of Talzin. Others pointed out the folly in getting rid of a competent antagonist heading into a potential Ahsoka season 2 in light of the unfortunate passing of Ray Stevenson, who portrayed the venerable Baylan Skoll in what many consider the series’ standout performance. As they see it, two interesting antagonists have now been taken off the board, with one of those being a preventable move.

Inosanto’s performance was a significant factor in the season’s structure, with her skill carrying two major fight scenes and her legitimate aura lending her scenes a lot of weight even in places where the scripting or acting was a bit wanting. Her presence was one reason Ahsoka is one of the best Disney Plus shows for 2023 and would have been a welcome addition to any potential future seasons and even spin-offs or independent Star Wars projects in the future. Some fans have expressed hope that Morgan Elsbeth might still be alive. They point out that since the character is a Nightsister, it’s possible that she survived or could be brought back by her peers or her awakened powers.

While Star Wars characters have occasionally returned from seemingly fatal situations a la Maul, there’s also the chance that it sticks and Morgan Elsbeth stays gone from the franchise forever. Similarly to Mace Windu not being likely to return to Star Wars, the character’s death in service of her allies escaping might be deemed too pivotal to the emotional stakes of that moment to be undercut by her return.

Star Wars: Ahsoka is currently available for streaming on Disney Plus.
