The final season of Star Trek: Discovery will revolve around an Easter egg that fans will see at the end of the first episode, according to its co-creator Alex Kurtzman.

Kurtzman, a filmmaker and executive producer of all Star Trek projects, teased fans about the upcoming finale of Star Trek: Discovery, which will premiere next week. According to him, the fifth and final season will pay tribute to the original Star Trek lore. To help the audience better understand the final story arc, the executive producer hinted that the whole journey would be based on a hidden message to be featured in the final scenes of its first episode.

In a recent interview with TV Line, just days before the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery, Kurtzman confirmed that there would be Easter eggs that the audience should be watching out for in the series. He acknowledged that Easter eggs could backfire and might fall short of achieving their intended goal when only added to pay lip service and lacked substance. However, he clarified that it wasn’t the case for the show.

The Star Trek co-creator hinted that fans should keep their attention on the final scenes of the first episode because it would tie the previous events to the series’ remaining episodes. The Easter egg will be the audience’s compass on how the rest of the season will unfold. In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the U.S.S. Discovery crew will solve a mystery that sets them on an epic galactic quest to locate an ancient force whose presence has been purposefully concealed for generations. However, along the way, they will encounter adversaries who are also after the same power and will do all it takes to seize the prize for their own benefit.

In this particular case, the whole season is dependent on a very significant

Easter egg that you’ll find out at the end of the first episode. It sheds some light on things that happened in the past, but it also paves the way for where we go for the rest of the season.

Easter eggs play a significant role in the Star Trek franchise, adding layers of depth and nostalgia for fans while also serving as subtle nods to the rich history of the series. The people behind the franchise are creative in presenting them in various forms, like inside jokes or callbacks to previous episodes, characters, or elements of the program. They can also be visual cues or dialogue references. These hints create a link to the larger Star Trek universe, reinforcing its connection, and they are abundant across the series. For instance, in the second season, Discovery introduced the U.S.S. Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. This iconic ship is a major Easter egg for fans, as it harkens back to the original Star Trek series and the beloved characters of Captain Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. Additionally, there were numerous references to the Mirror Universe, including the visual cues featuring the Terran Empire emblem and thematic elements highlighting the characters with alternate personalities.

Kurtzman mentioning the Easter egg in the first episode and how it wraps the whole season confirms how the franchise uses this technique to keep the series tied to the bigger Star Trek lore. Thus, one should be attentive when the show premiers, especially at the last minute of the first episode.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 premieres on Paramount Plus on April 4, 2024.
