Solo Leveling is set a decade after the sudden appearance of supernatural portals to harsh and volatile worlds filled with monsters, which opened up across the globe and caused unprecedented catastrophe. “Hunters” are individuals who delve into these portals known as “Gates”, and E-Rank Hunter Sung Jinwoo is known derisively as “The Weakest Hunter” due to his tendency to only just barely scrape through each raid with his life.

With no career prospects and ever-looming responsibilities, Jinwoo has no choice but to continue risking his life, so he gladly accepts the chance at a more lucrative job. However, he’d come to meet a being more powerful than any of the other monsters he’d ever encountered.

The Solo Leveling anime adaptation was first revealed at Crunchyroll’s Anime Expo 2022 Industry Panel, which was in July last year. The series is being produced by staff at A1-Pictures (Lycoris Recoil), with direction by Shunsuke Nakashige, scripts by Noboru Kimura, character designs by Tomoko Sudo, and monster designs by Hirotaka Tokuda.

The cast includes Taito Ban as Jinwoo Sung/Shun Mizushino, Reina Ueda as Hae-In Cha/Shizuku Kosaka, Daisuke Hirakawa as Jong-In Choi/Shin Mogami, Banjou Ginga as Gunhee Go/Kiyoomi Gotō and Genta Nakamura as Jinho Yoo/Kenta Morohishi. Initially set for release sometime in 2023, the adaptation was delayed for Winter 2024 and the original series illustrator DUBU sadly passed away a few weeks after the announcement.

The Solo Leveling World Premiere will have the first two episodes of the series aired in three cities in December: Tokyo and Seoul have their screening on December 10, while the Los Angeles screening will be taking place on December 14. Solo Leveling has been slated for broadcast in January 2024, and Crunchyroll is set to stream the series.

The Solo Leveling webtoon is available to read on Tappytoon and Tapas.
