With Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega gone from the Scream sequel, there are only a few characters who could return to Scream 7. Ever since the seventh movie in the clever and popular meta slasher franchise was announced shortly after Scream 6 was released in March 2023, fans have been curious about the cast members, director, storyline, and of course, who the new Ghostface killer (or killers) will be.
With plot and character details being kept under wraps for now, Scream fans can’t wait to find out which cast members will return to Scream 7. There are a few past targets of Ghostface who definitely need to appear in the seventh movie in the horror franchise.
Which Characters Should Come Back For Scream 7?
Of all the Scream characters who could return for Scream 7, it would be interesting if Scream 7 focused on Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) or the horror movie told a new story about Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox). But out of all the potential characters who could appear in Scream 7, the smart and witty twins Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding) and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) should definitely be included.
Chad and Mindy are introduced in Scream (2022) as the nephew and niece of original character Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy), the movie buff responsible for explaining horror movie rules in Scream and Scream 2. Chad and Mindy both play important roles in the fifth and sixth movies in the slasher franchise. While Chad appears to be a high school student who cares about popularity at first, he shows himself to be a kind, perceptive, and sensitive character when he and Tara Carpenter begin dating in Scream 6. Mindy is as obsessed with horror movies as her uncle was, which makes her a crucial character who can help track down each new Ghostface.
Both Chad and Mindy play an active role in fighting some of the Scream Ghostface killers, which is why they should both return for Scream 7. While Chad is wrong to suspect Vince Schneider (Kyle Gallner) in Scream (2022), this proves that he cares about his friends and family surviving, which is a powerful motivation. In Scream 6, Mindy says that no character will be able to escape Ghostface, which is the truth.
Mindy takes on Randy’s tradition of explaining the rules of horror movies, which helps Scream maintain its meta franchise tone and also ensures that the fifth and sixth films fit seamlessly into the franchise. As she says:
“See, you can’t just reboot a franchise from scratch anymore. The fans won’t stand for it. Black Christmas, Child’s Play, Flatliners, that shit doesn’t work. But you can’t just do a straight sequel, either. You need to build something new.”
She continued, “But not too new or the Internet goes bug-f*cking-nuts. It has to be part of an ongoing storyline, even if that story should never have been going on in the first place.” Mindy added:
“New main characters, yes, but supported by, and related to, legacy characters. Not quite a reboot, not quite a sequel, like the new
Halloween
,
Saw
,
Terminator
,
Jurassic Park
,
Ghostbusters
, f*ck, even
Star Wars
. It always, always goes back to the original!”
If Kirby and Gale do return, it would be fun to see Chad and Mindy interacting with them. There is a humorous and memorable scene in Scream 6 when Mindy and Kirby bond over their love of horror movies. These four characters each have strengths and weaknesses and could help each other with their blind spots to fight the new Ghostface. Scream 7 should focus on the last two members of the Core Four instead of bringing back the ghost of Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich).
Which Scream Cast Members Are Confirmed For Scream 7?
Although it would make sense for Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Courteney Cox to return to Scream 7, they have not been confirmed as of mid-March 2024. Given the two significant updates about Scream 7 announced in March 2024 including the news that Kevin Williamson will direct the seventh movie, fans know that Neve Campbell is returning to play Sidney Prescott in Scream 7.
Since Chad Meeks-Martin, Mindy Meeks-Martin, and Gale Weathers survived the Ghostface attacks in Scream (2022) and Scream 6, there is a good chance that they will come back. While Chad almost died in Scream 6, Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt, who wrote both the fifth and sixth movies, gave an interview to Business Insider about deciding to keep the character alive.
Vanderbilt said:
“You know, ‘Scream’ movies are sort of supposed to be roller coasters. And Tyler Gillett, one of the directors, talks about that they’re meant to be secret feel-good movies at the end of the day. And we kind of felt like, you want to get off the roller coaster and you want to be smiling, not bummed and him not surviving at the end of the movie felt like a real… Chad has cheated death once again. He was supposed to die in 5 and he didn’t. And he made it through this.”
