Many changes have happened since Scream7 was announced in 2023, from Christopher Landon exiting the project to Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera no longer being part of the movie. Although Neve Campbell didn’t return for Scream 6 because she wasn’t offered a fair salary, there is still hope that she could star in the new horror movie. Since Sidney Prescott is one of the most famous final girls in the horror genre, many would say that there will always be a place for her independence, strength, and intelligence.
With fans wondering what Scream 7 will look like, it’s the perfect time to wonder if Sidney Prescott should come back or if the slasher franchise can move on without her. This is a subject that many fans have been debating for a while now.
Do Scream Fans Want Sidney Prescott To Return For Scream 7?
Ever since Scream 7 was first announced, fans of the slasher franchise have debated whether they want to see Neve Campbell play Sidney Prescott again. In a thread on the topic on Reddit, fans agreed that the character would need to be integrated into the story seamlessly and logically. It wouldn’t make sense to feature Sidney just because. Redditor @Antique-Cantaloupe69 wrote:
“It would have to be something that directly affects her and the life she’s built. In 6 she wasn’t involved because Sam was the target. She and her family went into hiding as a precaution but she wasn’t targeted… they would both have to be targets or both affected somehow.”
Several fans raised the point that Sidney should appear in Scream 7 because she doesn’t have a satisfying conclusion in Scream (2022). Redditor @Zestyclose-Check wrote that Campbell “deserves a better send off to her character” than what she got in the fifth movie in the franchise. Redditor @joe96ab agreed:
“I think they should give us a little more closure. I want to actually see her and her family properly exit the franchise. They can leave the country at the end of 7 or something.”
Redditor @DylanDr thinks that if an eighth Scream movie was made, it would be fun if the franchise followed the Nightmare On Elm Street movie New Nightmare. It would definitely be fun if Scream 8 told a meta story about Campbell playing this iconic final girl for so long. The true story behind Freddy Krueger killing people in their dreams makes every Nightmare movie seem more eerie and chilling, and since the late and legendary director Wes Craven worked on both horror franchises, this would be fitting.
The fan wrote, “Scream 8 should be Neve returning to play herself being attacked by Ghostface in real life like Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. Sidney’s story is done, but it would be a great way to refresh the series while also giving Neve an incredible final send-off from the franchise!”
What Happened To Sidney Prescott In Scream (2022)?
Horror fans were thrilled that Neve Campbell returned to play Sidney Prescott in Scream (2022). When Dewey Riley (David Arquette) calls her to let her know that another Ghostface is going on a reign of terror, Sidney is scared but fully prepared to return to her old life. She takes all the lessons that she has learned in the years since she left her hometown of Woodsboro, California and teams up with Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), who thankfully survives Scream 6, to end this killing spree once and for all. Sidney has been living a nice family life with her husband Mark Kincaid and their two children, and it’s unnerving for her to deal with her traumatic memories from the past.
Sidney survives yet another attack from Ghostface in Scream (2022) and has one of the most hilarious and intelligent lines in the entire movie. When Amber Freeman (Mikey Madison) is revealed as one of the two killers, Sidney says:
“Let me guess, the movies made you do it?”
Scream (2022) featured several fresh characters, including Jenna Ortega’s character Tara Carpenter who loves elevated horror movies and who survives the first Ghostface attack in the horror movie. While it was fun to see how new characters like Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy-Brown) fit into the story, it was also great to see what one of the best examples of the horror movie final girl trope was doing.
While Neve Campbell’s reasoning for not joining Scream 6 makes sense, she explained in an interview with People that she felt “sad” about it. She said:
“I love these movies. I love Sidney. I love this franchise; I’m so grateful for it. But at the same time, I really just couldn’t bear the idea of walking onto [the sixth film] and feeling undervalued.”
While it remains to be seen if Campbell will return for Scream 7, there are many ways that Sidney could fit into the franchise again. It doesn’t feel like her story is over.
