Being in a relationship isn’t always easy, especially for Scott Pilgrim. As a highly flawed guy, Scott is the closest person to a hero in Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. While he’s fighting for his life and his love for Ramona Flowers, his own past relationships catch up with him, which creates a bit of drama for everyone.
Scott is your average young adult still trying to navigate life out of college and the beginning of adulthood. This mainly means trying to understand how to be in a relationship with Ramona Flowers, his newest girlfriend. Unfortunately, Scott’s relationship with Ramona leads him to fight against her former relationships. But, Scott has been in a few relationships of his own, and they haven’t exactly ended on mutual terms.

Kimberly “Kim” Pine
In the comics, Scott and Kimberly Pine met sometime in high school. Scott, Kim, and Lisa Miller eventually decided to make a band by the name of “Sonic & Knuckles,” a not-so-subtle homage to Sonic & Knuckles for the Sega Genesis. However, Kim was kidnapped by Simon Lee. After Scott beats Simon and saves Kim, Scott and Kim start dating. But, it only lasted up until Scott’s family moved to Toronto.
About a year before the story takes place, Kim moves to Toronto where she forms the band “Sex Bob-omb” as the drummer with Scott on bass and Stephen Stills on guitar and vocals. While she endures Scott’s childish, obnoxious, and oafish attitude, Kim holds a lot of resentment toward Scott. The truth about their relationship and breakup wasn’t as clean as Scott made it appear.
Scott believes he fought a bunch of guys and saved Kim from Simon, much like Mario saves Princess Peach from Bowser. However, Scott only punched Simon after seeing him hug Kim. Simon was a wimpy, Korean-Canadian kid who was Kim’s brief boyfriend until Scott showed up. Kim and Scott did break up after Scott moved away, but the feeling wasn’t mutual. Scott told Lisa about the move, who then told Kim. And, their relationship didn’t pick back up after Kim moved to Toronto where Scott was.
Kim’s and Scott’s friendship did find some resolve later on. Kim moved back to Northern Ontario in the comics, but not before Scott apologized for the past. Later, Scott travels to Northern Ontario for a wilderness sabbatical where he meets up with Kim and remembers what he did to Simon. While Simon Lee doesn’t get any kind of redemption arc, Scott leaves for home with one last kiss from Kim. In the movie, Scott and Kim seem to have a mutual understanding after Scott apologizes for what he did to her.
Natalie V. “Envy” Adams
Scott and Natalie V. Adams met at the University of Toronto. The two were introduced by Julie Powers and started a relationship because they thought Julie was fake and obnoxious. Scott, Natalie, and Stephen formed the band named “Kid Chameleon.”
As the band grew, so did Natalie. She started selling off her possessions and becoming less of a nerdy geek, transforming herself into a rock idol. Natalie eventually started going by the name Envy Adams, a play on the initials of her first and middle name “N.V.” At this point she started distancing herself from Scott, even going as far as cheating on him. Envy eventually kicked him out of the band when he wouldn’t agree to a major label signing. The two broke up on New Year’s Eve and since then, Scott’s taken the breakup hard. Any mere mention of Envy’s name causes him to flinch in pain.

Envy Adams shows up later in Scott’s life. She’s now a vocalist in a band named “ The Clash at Demonhead” with Lynette Guycott on drums and Envy’s new boyfriend Todd Ingram on bass. Envy and Todd had an on-and-off friendship as kids, yet their relationship didn’t go far. Todd left once, returning with vegan powers, and left a second time for Vegan Academy. They eventually reunited and started the band and dated.
Todd has been cheating on Envy with Lynette, causing an immediate breakup when Envy finds out, and Scott headbutts him into a pile of coins. Envy leaves and goes to New York and starts dating Gideon Graves, the leader of the League of Ramona’s Evil Exes. The two have a very shoddy and distant relationship. Envy is with Gideon for money and fame and Gideon with Envy using her as his own little plaything. After the fight between Scott and Gideon, Envy and Scott have one final moment.
Knives Chau
When Scott Pilgrim’s story begins, Scott is in a relationship with Knives Chau. Knives is a 17-year-old high school student. The two met on a bus with Knives’ mother, and they started dating soon after. Despite Knives being in high school, the six-year age gap, and shame from Scott’s bandmates, the two seemed fairly compatible. Knives got to see Scott’s band practice and became a huge fan.
However, Scott starts dating Ramona Flowers behind Knives’ back. Scott became distant and started fishing for reasons to end the relationship mutually. However, Knives had the opposite feeling. She became more engrossed in Scott’s life. But, Scott eventually got the nerve to dump Knives.
The relationship between Scott and knives fluctuates, mostly from Knives’ perspective. At one moment, she’s upset and fighting Ramona with ninja-like abilities and, at another, she’s infatuated. Knives targets some of her anger toward Ramona and has a fling with Young Neil (because Neil looks like Scott) and Kim (while the two are drinking). However, Stephen told Knives that she was a holdover until Scott found someone else. This causes Knives’ anger towards Ramona to reignite.
At the very end, Scott tries to have a one-night fling with Knives, which she kindly declines and tells Scott that he was a terrible boyfriend. Knives admits to still loving Scott and the two have an awkward kiss. The two become friends and Knives tells Scott that he will always be her “Class at Demonhead” (whatever that means).” Many fans wanted Scott to get with Knives at the very end, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
Lisa Miller
Lisa Miller is a very small part of Scott’s life. The two met in high school with Kim. They formed a band, but Scott never got too close to Lisa, despite some mutual attraction. Scott eventually moved to Toronto.
It’s debatable if there was any romantic involvement between Lisa and Scott. Yes, the two were close. Yes, they were close to “doing it,” but not before Scott admitted his love for Ramona and passed out after binge-eating pizza. But, they didn’t do anything. The best that these two could have was some sexual attraction that ultimately ended up going nowhere. That doesn’t stop Ramona from feeling jealous of Lisa. Lisa’s arc ends with her leaving for California to further pursue her acting career.
Ramona Flowers
Ramona is Scott’s biggest love interest. She’s the whole reason Scott goes through the trouble of fighting the League of Ramona’s Evil Exes. Scott first met Ramona in the Subspace Highway, a kind of space between spaces first introduced in Scott’s dream. From there, Scott hunts Ramona down and pressures her into a date.
Before Scott, Ramona had always been the first to break off any relationship she had and Scott was supposed to be something different. Ramona thought Scott was the nicest boy she’s been with, which is a bit sad once you get to know Scott. Their relationship isn’t a walk in the park, however. Scott has to defeat all seven of Ramona’s exes, leading up to Gideon, the founder of the league. The battles aren’t easy and it takes a toll on Scott’s and Ramona’s relationship.
Knives eventually admits to Ramona that Scott cheated on her with Ramona. Who was being cheated on was beside the point and Ramona breaks up with Scott, which causes him to go into a spiral. But, Ramona realized that she was no better than Scott, having cheated on many of her past relationships. She disappears in a flash of light.
Sometime later, Gideon defeats Scott. Scott finds Ramona in the Subspace, and she admits she wasn’t a very good girlfriend. After Scott gets a life, the two work together to fight Gideon, but it turns out Gideon has more control over Ramona than previously thought. The fight went on a bit longer. Ramona stands up against Gideon and they finally defeat him.
Fans of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off may not get to see the full history behind every one of Scott’s exes. But, by the end of the story, Scott’s done a lot of growing. And, his relationship with Romano is stronger because of it. As another generation grows up with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, many people can learn a bit from Scott and how to (or how not to) handle their own love lives.
