Despite the last Thor movie not being as successful as others, fans are hopeful that Thor 5 will turn things around. With Marvel Studios’ schedule packed with major projects, updates on Thor have been sparse. However, reports now indicate that Marvel Studios is moving forward with plans for the next installment.
According to a new scoop by Daniel Richtman, Thor 5 is receiving a significant update and is slowly gearing up for production. The insider reports that filming is slated to begin in Fall 2025, despite the movie not yet having a director or a script. However, the post mentions that Marvel Studios is actively searching for a director and writer to take the movie in a new direction. Although this information is not confirmed, it has sparked skepticism among fans.
Richtman claims that the next installment of the Thor saga is slated to start filming in the Fall of next year, likely following Avengers: Secret Wars. The insider suggests, “not sure if it means it will be a post-Secret Wars project, my bet would be yes.” However, fans remain unconvinced primarily due to the absence of an established direction or script for the movie. Moreover, many are highlighting the tight filming schedule of numerous Marvel projects planned for the upcoming years as a significant obstacle. Given the current backlog of projects and production challenges Marvel is grappling with, it appears improbable for this to materialize. Without substantial expansions to their production teams, schedules, and filming locations, it is challenging to see how Thor 5 could align with their timeline. With numerous other films and series already queued up, initiating filming by 2025 would demand a monumental logistical effort.
Additionally, the post specifies that Marvel Studios is actively seeking a new director and writer for the upcoming movie. It was confirmed last year that Taika Waititi will not be returning to the directorial chair for the next installment. Expectations are high for the fifth movie to embrace a completely new and darker narrative, departing from its previous light-hearted and comedic approach. Recently, several names have surfaced in relation to the development, although none have been officially confirmed. Gareth Edwards, renowned for directing The Creator, has been rumored as a potential director for Thor 5. While he has addressed the rumors and expressed his admiration for the franchise, Edwards has indicated a preference for pursuing original sci-fi projects. Nevertheless, he has not ruled out the possibility, stating, “I never say never.” However, it seems unlikely for him to take on the role as he is now confirmed to direct Jurassic World 4. More recently, after collaborating on Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, speculation arose about George Miller potentially directing Thor 5. Miller acknowledged the rumors but refrained from giving a definitive answer, stating, “I would work with Chris on anything. I really would.” While the filmmaker is open to the idea, there has not been confirmation regarding his involvement in the production.
It appears that Thor 5 may mark the conclusion of the saga, a notion hinted at recently by Chris Hemsworth. While this could potentially signal the end of the Thor franchise, there remains the possibility for Hemsworth’s character to make appearances in other Marvel projects. With little else known about the movie, fans are eagerly anticipating what Thor 5 has in store.
The Thor films are available to stream on Disney Plus.
