In the past few days, a rumor has emerged that Studio Bones, the team behind Fullmetal Alchemist, Mob Psycho 100, My Hero Academia, and more, will adapt Kei Urana’s Gachiakuta. This is a brief breakdown of how this rumor began, the weight behind the claims being made from sources that have been deemed reliable, and what it means if the rumors are true.
Gachiakuta began serialization in 2022, written and illustrated by Kei Urana, a former assistant and avid fan of Soul Eater author Atsushi Ohkubo, who went so far as to call Urana his successor. This dark fantasy, set in the trash-filled slums of a world suffocated by wealth disparity, explores the concept of souls dwelling within items – especially those discarded among the trash heap.
How The Rumor Started
Before Bones’ name was swirling around in people’s heads, things started when X user Manga Reporter posted on May 26 about a new web domain related to Gachiakuta being registered. When asked about the name of this domain, Manga Reporter replied that it was titled “gachiakuta-anime dot com.” In reply to an inquiry about who would be animating the project, they didn’t offer a specific name but claimed it would be “a good studio.”
In that same reply regarding the studio, they cited another user – a self-proclaimed data miner by the username baguette0, who primarily posts HD key visuals from various anime projects. While there was no concrete source offered, Manga Reporter vouched for baguette0’s credibility. Ultimately, the web domain suggested that an announcement for an anime adaptation would be coming very soon.
Is Bones Animating It or Not?
One of the first and most substantive reports about Bones’ involvement came from X user Sugoi LITE, a notable source with a history of accurate leaks. Their post on the matter stated that a TV anime adaptation was scheduled for 2025 and that Bones would be the studio behind it. Past this point, the leaks need to be taken with larger and larger grains of salt because the specifics posited by other accounts are unsubstantiated and often lacking in credibility.
Some accounts have claimed that the adaptation will be specifically produced by Bones Studio A, one of their five studios, and the team behind Noragami, Wolf’s Rain, Gosick, and more. Again, nothing has been confirmed, and any claims as to the creative staff are likely false. With all that said, while the particulars are disputed, there is good reason to suspect that Bones is involved, after the recently posted schedule for Anime Expo 2024.
A Panel with Bones and Kodansha
Beginning at 3:15 PM PT, July 4, Bones will be hosting a panel to announce a “New Anime Project” with Kodansha, the manga publisher serializing Gachiakuta. Although fans have gotten their hopes up for Studio Bones announcements at Anime Expo in the past and have been disappointed, the timing just feels too perfect for this to not be about Gachiakuta.
Why Bones Is a Great Fit
It’s no surprise that people have jumped onto this rumor with excitement. Bones is one of the most storied studios in the anime industry and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Their reputation for daring original projects, high-quality manga adaptations that have taken the world by storm, and incredible action animation, have earned them quite a reputation.
But apart from the studio’s clout, though, Bones was also the home of 2008’s Soul Eater anime, a beloved adaptation despite its anime-original ending. For fans of Gachiakuta who see it as a spiritual successor to Soul Eater, it feels extra fitting that the studio that adapted the inspiration would also adapt the inspired. At the very least, fans need only wait one more month to figure out if the rumors are true or false.
