Amazon has confirmed that the live-action series Noir based on Spider-Man is moving forward, with Nicolas Cage reprising his role as the 1930s-era superhero.
Marvel Comics introduced Spider-Man Noir in 2009 as a part of their Noir universe. However, Sony Pictures introduced the character in its cinematic universe with the animated feature Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The character, played by Cage, received a lot of praise and didn’t take much time to become a fan favorite. As a result, in 2023, Sony and Amazon Studios announced that they were developing a series based on the aforementioned character. Now, almost a year after the initial announcement, both production giants have finally revealed that Noir is moving forward.
According to the press release by Amazon, Cage will officially be reprising the role of Spider-Man Noir in the upcoming series. The press release also revealed that Noir will unfold the narrative of an aging and downtrodden private investigator (played by Cage) in 1930s New York. The character is compelled to confront his former life as the city’s sole superhero. Furthermore, Amazon announced that Emmy-winning director Harry Bradbeer will be directing the first two episodes of the forthcoming series. Meanwhile, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will serve as executive producers on the show.
For the uninitiated, the debut of Peter Parker/Spider-Man Noir occurred in Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man Noir #1. The comic was launched in 2009 within the Marvel Noir Universe. This version of the popular comic book character lives in a Great Depression-afflicted New York City. Following a bite from a spider concealed within an artifact, Parker experiences a mystical vision of a spider-deity, granting him his iconic superhero abilities. Spider-Man Noir wears a mask with goggles to hide his identity and wears a Kevlar that can withstand bullets and explosions. Noir is one of the rare renditions of the superhero that uses a revolver to take down criminals.
It has taken almost a year for Amazon MGM and Sony Pictures to announce that the Noir series is not dead. However, the biggest takeaway from the recent announcement is Cage’s participation in the upcoming live-action series. The character took everyone by storm in the 2018 Oscar-winning movie Into the Spider-Verse. Cage voiced the character in the film and garnered a lot of praise. However, the character was largely absent from the 2023 sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Since then, fans have been asking Sony and Marvel to bring the mysterious character back into the mix. Now that the Noir series has officially been announced, it doesn’t come as a shock that Amazon and Sony chose to cast Cage as the titular character. The involvement of Cage gives the series a massive boost and may draw more attention to the series, increasing its visibility and appeal to a wider audience. Also, Cage has the potential to elevate the portrayal of the aging and conflicted superhero in the series.
Apart from the series, Cage’s Noir will also play an important role in the third Spider-Verse movie, Beyond the Spider-Verse. No release date has been set for the Noir series.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse is available for streaming on Prime Video.
