One Punch Man: Where Do Monsters Come From?

The monsters in the One Punch Man series, also otherwise known as mysterious beings are creatures that exist for many reasons, but the main one being a threat to humanity, destroying cities and killing the innocent.

Monsters also play a crucial role in the development of the series and also while they still pose no real threat to the protagonist – Saitama, they are still vital in the development of the story and character building in the series. While monsters are created in different ways there are specific ways in which are either created, mutated, or even transformed from humans.

Let There Be Monsters?

Monsters are cruel beings that roam the world in the One Punch Man series and is one of the main reasons the Hero Association was founded. Humans can also turn into monsters if they become too engrossed in their bad habits, this can activate abnormal cell reactions in the body which can begin transforming them into monsters. Another way monsters are created are by mutagens, these are when monsters are artificially created using science, an example of these type of mutants are – Mosquito Girl, Marugori (the human who turned into a giant), Carnage Kabuto and many more. Creatures who are not humans can also turn into monsters if they are exposed to radiation, pollution, or they can also be genetically engineered. An example of a monster created through pollution is Vaccine Man, who was born from the release of excessive pollution and waste generated by man made factories. Finally, there are also monsters who have been around for centuries and have been commonly known to be enemies of humans, such as vampires and aliens. Monsters can come in all forms of shapes and sizes, some are seen to be grotesque or bizarre while others have more of a humanoid form with a mixture of monster like features and can transform into powerful threats.

Majority of the monsters usually possess superhuman strength and abilities making them formidable opponents and difficult to kill. Their powers can range from super strength or uniquely dangerous abilities. The motivation behind a monster’s actions can be for various reasons, some might cause chaos and destruction in an attempt to gain power and recognition while others may just want to cause destruction to society. There are also monsters who carry out their actions because of revenge, personal grievances, vendetta towards humankind or negative emotions. While some monsters prefer to work alone, there are also those who forms alliances with the aim to become a powerful threat, such as the Monster Association. Monsters also are categorized based on their disaster levels and heroes in turn are dispatched accordingly to take care of the threat. The Hero Association is constantly bombarded by more powerful monsters that continue to emerge from the darkness. Monster threats are a recurring theme in the series and is key to the development of plot.

While there are many types of monsters in the series, and they can be classified into various categories such as vampires, seafolk, skyfolk, subterranean people, terror lizards, forest tribes, and aliens. There are also humans who turn into bizarre monsters because of their obsessions. The artificial types of monsters are those that are created using mutagens (genetic modifications) or through mechanical engineering such as robots and cyborgs. There is also half-human, half-monster beings who do not completely become either but only half of both, Garou is an example of one. The infused type of monsters are mysterious beings who become monsters after consuming things like monster cells which results in their transformation but with negative side effects.

Monsters are also classified by their disaster levels, this is based on their destructive powers and abilities. The following levels are the categories monsters can be separated from the lowest known as Wolf level threats to the highest known as God level threats, there are also categories in between such as Tiger, Demon, and Dragon level threats. The reason why monsters are given these categories is to estimate the level of destruction they are capable of and to warn the public to evacuate the cities that pose a potential threat of destruction. The difficult in defeating the monster also is another factor that is looked into when categorizing the monsters according to threat levels.
