One Piece: Why The Gorosei Might Be Able To Swim, Explained

Highlights

  • The Gorosei, Five Elders in One Piece, have powerful Yokai abilities that make them formidable foes.
  • Revealed powers include freezing, invisible damage, venom, nukes, and immortality.
  • The Elders might be able to swim, with abilities beyond standard devil fruits, linked to Imu and the Mother Sea.

The Gorosei, also known as the Five Elders, are some of the most important characters in One Piece, especially in the final saga. These Elders are now some of the main antagonists, as One Piece edges closer to its end with each passing arc. Of course, the Five Elders were always intended to be some of the most monstrously powerful individuals that Luffy and his allies would come up against, and their strength has already been shown to be immense during the Egghead Island arc. Fans finally got their first taste of their strength in this arc, especially when Saturn summoned all of them using summoning circles once Vegapunk’s message was about to begin.

Ever since then, fans have gotten a fantastic showing of what they are truly capable of in battle, and how monstrous they truly are, both in terms of power, and their personality. Now, it appears that the Gorosei might actually be even more monstrous, as, despite having Yokai abilities, which resemble Devil Fruit powers, they might yet be able to swim.

The Gorosei’s Yokai Powers

The Gorosei Have Confusing Powers That Have Never Been Seen Before

The Five Elders were introduced in One Piece long ago, but their powers were only revealed in the Final Saga. The very first reveal of the power of the Five Elders came through Saint Saturn, who made quite an impact in the Egghead Island arc. Saturn arrived on Egghead in quite some style and transformed into his Gyuki form. Then, fans got to see him utilize many interesting powers. For instance, Saturn utilized his ability to freeze people in their places with ease. He also utilized the ability to deal invisible damage to his enemies, and the more the arc continued, fans got to see more of his abilities as well. Saturn also showcased the ability to use venom in combat, as well as nuke-like explosives which would essentially be capable of destroying just about anything in their path.

Above all, the most impressive ability that Saturn showed was his regeneration. Saturn can essentially regenerate from anything, and it is safe to say that he is immortal, unless killed in a very specific manner that Oda has not yet revealed to the fans.

The most worrisome part is there are four more such monsters in One Piece, and together, they are what fans know as the Five Elders. Saturn summoned the remaining four to Egghead towards the very end, and fans got to see all of their powers in their full glory. Saint Nusjuro was revealed to have the power of Bakotsu, Saint Warcury was revealed to have the power of the Feng Xi, Saint Ju Peter was revealed to have the power of the sandworm, and finally, Saint Mars had the ability of the Itsumade. All of them are incredibly dangerous abilities, with the potential to cause large-scale destruction and fight at the highest of levels. If the fans ever had any doubt about the strength of the Gorosei, this display of abilities on Egghead completely erased that.

All the Gorosei have unique powers up their sleeve and above all, they all seem to be immortal, which is what makes defeating them far more difficult than anything that fans could ever imagine. Their transformations are strong, but one would think that there are many powerful devil fruits in One Piece already and that these five having different abilities doesn’t matter much. However, when one looks carefully at their powers, they might not be devil fruits at all. In fact, Oda did not refer to them as devil fruits in the first place. Instead, he simply referred to them with their Yokai forms, and it is quite clear to see that they don’t follow the standard devil fruit logic. This leads one to believe that they might be even more fearsome than predicted earlier, and they might have the ability to swim.

Warcury’s Leap Into The Ocean In One Piece 1119

Warcury Hinted At Having The Ability To Swim In One Piece

One Piece chapter 1119 gave fans quite a lot of intriguing things to theorize about. Even though the chapter was just 13 pages long, fans got to see quite a lot of exciting content inside. Quite easily, the most exciting part of the chapter came towards the end, when Luffy was fighting against Ju Peter. At the same time, Warcury rushed past him in an attempt to leap to the ship of the Giants and completely destroy it. Luffy was unable to stop him because he had his hands full with Ju Peter. At that point, Luffy had fear in his eyes because he knew that Warcury could essentially crush the Giants in a single attack.

However, at the right time, Emet, the Iron Giant, sprung forth from the water and planted a powerful punch across Warcury’s face. This pushed him back onto the island once again, but, at the same time, it covered something very interesting that fans would have noticed otherwise.

When Warcury tried to attack the ship of the Giants, he actually lept off the island and charged towards a sailing ship. This essentially means that he would have landed in water after attacking the ship of the Giants and would most certainly have drowned, that is, if he followed standard devil fruit logic.

Any devil fruit user cannot stand seawater. In fact, The sea is one of the biggest weaknesses of any devil fruit user, and if Warcury was a devil fruit user, he would most certainly not have lept off the island the way he did. This leads one to believe that the Fengxi might actually be able to swim in the water, which would also apply to all the other members of the Five Elders. This would suggest that the Five Elders are actually capable of swimming as well, and it would make perfect sense.

One would think that Warcury jumping off the island was no big deal and that he would somehow manage to avoid contact with water. However, he is not a creature who can fly and, as such, for him to decide to jump into the water simply means that it knows that it can’t survive the situation by swimming. This essentially means that all the Elders can swim, and while that might be confusing to the fans right now, it makes perfect sense. The Five Elders are not normal devil fruit users. In fact, they don’t even seem to have normal devil fruit abilities.

Their powers are on a completely different level, and most of all, they seem to come from Mother Sea, or Umi. Fans must remember that Imu is wordplay on Umi, which fans know to be Mother Sea. It was also made quite clear by Vegapunk that mother nature hates those who consume devil fruits and makes them sink.

But, if Mother Nature was directly linked to Imu, then, one would assume that Imu is one of the few individuals who cannot sink. Given that the Elders are followers of Imu and might simply be his projections as well, then this ability should extend to them as well. This would explain why the Five Elders can actually swim and why the ocean is not a weakness of theirs either.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1120, is set to be July 14, 2024.
