The Ope Ope no Mi is one of the most overpowered Devil Fruits in the world of One Piece. Dubbed the Ultimate Devil Fruit, this fruit is worth up to 5 billion berries, which is a massive amount and just goes to show how important this power really is.

The powers of this Devil Fruit were properly explained in the story during the events of the Dressrosa arc. However, there are secrets to the powers of this fruit that are still relevant to this day and will be relevant once again in the Final Saga. One Piece volume 107, which was launched recently, clarified a major aspect of the powers of this Devil Fruit that quite a lot of fans might have been confused by in the past.
What Is The Ope Ope no Mi?
The Ope Ope no Mi belongs to the Paramecia class of Devil Fruits. This fruit was eaten by none other than Trafalgar Law, who is a member of the Worst Generation. Law ate this Devil Fruit at a very young age and, since then, has grown to master its powers in every way possible. Only a doctor can make the full use of this Devil Fruit ability and, for that reason, Law has had to put hours upon hours into perfecting the usage of this power.
Essentially, the Ope Ope no Mi is an ability that allows Law to create massive rooms. These Rooms are created around the user and can be spread over a very large area. Whoever finds themselves inside the Room is just like a patient on an operating table for Law. Law can do whatever he wants in the room, controlling every single aspect of it, from those who are present inside it, to things such as terrain as well.
The Ope Ope no Mi has given Law quite a lot of incredible powers. For instance, he can utilize powerful abilities such as Counter Shock, which allows him to produce powerful electrical shocks from his thumbs, or even Gamma Knife, which is made of gamma radiation, that can pierce any defense in the world of One Piece and deal internal damage. There are other techniques that Law can use, such as Amputate, using what she can slice open the bodies of his enemies without them even feeling pain, making it easier for him to operate on them. He can also use Radio Knife, which works similarly to amputate but keeps his enemies from reassembling, giving him a huge advantage. Law can use teleportation within his rooms and swap the places of objects however he likes. Clearly, even the basic application of this Devil Fruit is incredibly amazing.
The Biggest Power Of The Ope Ope no Mi – The Perennial Youth Surgery
The biggest powers of the Ope Ope no Mi are ones that Doflamingo took a very special interest in. These powers are the Personality Swap power and the Perennial Youth Surgery. The Personality Swap ability allows the user to swap the personalities of two people. Essentially, one person finds themselves inside the body of another and gains complete control over them. Law can do this with anyone around him and essentially swap them, just as he did with the Straw Hat Pirates on the island of Punk Hazard. He can also put himself in the body of another person and this power just goes to show that he can gain access to the bodies of some of the most dangerous people in the entire world. If this ability was not deadly enough, there is another that the user of Ope Ope no Mi can perform.

This is called the Perennial Youth Surgery. Essentially, at the cost of their own life, the doctor who uses this Devil Fruit can grant eternal life to someone else. Doflamingo wanted to have his brother, Rosinante, use this power on him, however, his plans failed. It is largely due to this power of the Ope Ope no Mi that Doflamingo was chasing down this Devil Fruit actively. After Law ate the Devil Fruit, he then started to groom him for this position, however, given the circumstances following the death of Rosinante, Law, of course, went against him. While fans might believe that Dressrosa was the last arc in which the Ope Ope no Mi was relevant, they might have to think again.
The strongest character in the world of One Piece has a direct connection to the powers of this Devil Fruit and this person is none other than Imu.
Volume 107’s Correction On The Power Of The Ope Ope no Mi
In One Piece volume 107, Oda made a very specific change in dialogue during the fight between Blackbeard and Law. Fans know that in the Final Saga, some very big fights unfolded. One of the biggest fights that fans got to see in the final saga of One Piece was between these two Worst Generation members. Law opened the offensive using the powers of his Devil Fruit Awakening and dealt some tremendous damage to Blackbeard, injuring him quite a lot in the process. Even the Heart Pirates put on a very great performance against the Blackbeard Pirates. However, after a few chapters, it was clear that they couldn’t stand the might of this Yonko crew. Eventually, they were crushed and Law was defeated. Given that Blackbeard was on the hunt for powerful Devil Fruits, it was only a matter of time before he was interested in the power that Law possessed as well.
Blackbeard, particularly, seemed to be interested in the Perennial Youth Surgery. Originally in the manga, Blackbeard commented if this Devil Fruit would actually grant him immortality. However, this is where the interesting part comes in. One Piece Volume 107 changes this dialogue and, instead of asking if this Devil Fruit would grant him immortality, Blackbeard simply asks if it will give him eternal youth. Essentially, this means that the Ope Ope no Mi cannot grant immortality to the user but simply eternal youth, and these two, although similar in some ways, are starkly different.
This implies that the Ope Ope no Mi cannot make it so that the user cannot die. Anyone who has the surgery performed on them can indeed die, however, not of natural causes. Essentially, they will stay young forever, and aging will simply have no effect on their bodies; this also implies that any other means of killing would then still work against them. For instance, if someone were to behead them or make it so that the organs necessary for them to function are destroyed, they should, theoretically, die. This is very important as it opens up a way for one of the strongest characters in One Piece, Imu, to fall in the final Saga.
Fans know that Imu could have had the Perennial Youth Surgery performed on him. Ivankov, the commander of the G Army of the Revolutionary Army recently stated that he believed that Imu was a relic from the Void Century. Ivankov continued and added the fact that Imu could have had the Perennial Youth Surgery performed on them. This implies that Imu is forever youthful and still the same age that they were during the Void Century. However, this does not mean that Imu cannot die. Imu can very well be defeated and also killed since the powers of the Ope Ope no Mi are limited to eternal youth and not immortality.
One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1097, is set to be November 5, 2023.
