One Piece SBS volume 107 turned out to be no different and, in a lot of rather uninformative stuff, fans found quite a lot of interesting details that tie very well to ongoing story events in the final saga of the series.
Bonney’s Devil Fruit
One of the most interesting things that Oda revealed in SBS volume 107 was the name of Bonney’s Devil Fruit. Fans know that Bonney possesses a powerful Devil Fruit that lets her manipulate age at will. This Devil Fruit belongs to the Paramecia class and it allows Bonney to change people’s ages on contact. The first time this Devil Fruit was used was during the Sabaody Archipelago arc and, on this island, Bonney was seen changing the ages of various Marines when the fighting broke out. From the get-go, this Devil Fruit seemed incredibly overpowered. As the story progressed, fans got to see more powers of this incredible Devil Fruit.
In the Egghead Arc, fans saw the fact that Bonney could remove the age of someone from their body or, even turn them into a different version of themselves using the power of Distortion Future. Bonney could turn herself into a muscular being that resembled a member of the Buccaneer race or, turn someone into an alternate personality, following a terrible future, just as she did with Luffy when she turned him into an old man. This Devil Fruit is incredibly overpowered and it was only a matter of time before Oda revealed more details about it. In One Piece SBS volume 107, Oda revealed the name of this Devil Fruit to be the Toshi Toshi no Mi, or the Age Age Fruit. This doesn’t come as a surprise to the fans and is quite straightforward, along the lines of what fans expected in the first place.
SWORD Lore And Backstories
Another very important aspect of the story that was revealed by Oda in One Piece SBS volume 107 was the backstories of members of the Marine group known as SWORD. To begin with, Oda explained how SWORD works as well. SWORD was only recently introduced in One Piece and fans assumed this unit to be composed of Navy officers who had deserted the group. That doesn’t seem to be the case, according to One Piece volume 107 SBS. According to Oda, all members of SWORD are still Marines. In fact, they can even be promoted or demoted, just like any regular Marine. However, the fact is that the members of SWORD specifically hand in their resignation. These resignations are not immediately accepted by the Marines. Instead, they are only cut loose when something happens and the Marines simply don’t claim responsibility for them.
At the same time, Oda also revealed the backstories of several members of SWORD that were recently introduced in One Piece, starting with Hibari. Fans know Hibari to be a Lieutenant of the SWORD of Marines. She is also deeply in love with Captain Koby, as seen in the Egghead Island arc. This isn’t out of the blue, however. When she was younger, Koby saved her from a ravaged battlefield. Unfortunately, she lost her bear on the battlefield, which she believed was very precious to her. Koby then returned to the battlefield and ignored all the orders of his superiors just to return her treasure back to her. Several days later, he returned tattered but with the bear intact. This became the reason why she fell in love with them and she ended up naming the bear as Koby-Senpai.
Oda also revealed quite a lot of information about Prince Grus, however, it is certainly not as interesting as Hibari. Oda mentioned that Prince Grus was a very gloomy child. He was also somewhat clumsy and kept bumping into things wherever he went.
As a result, his mom got him a very long hat so that he didn’t bump into things anymore. Wearing that hat ever since, he stopped bumping into things as his hat would hit whatever was in front of him first, keeping him from getting injured. Of course, this doesn’t add much to the character of Prince Grus, however, it does showcase a very beautiful relationship that he has with his mom and the fact that he was one of the shy types in One Piece. This also explains why he wanted the attention of Garp so badly, and fans can only hope that he grows to become a fantastic marine in the future.
One of the most interesting bits of information in One Piece SBS volume 107 is related to the character of Kujaku. Fans know her to be One of the strongest members of SWORD and she was recently seen fighting on the Pirate Island. Kujaku was revealed to have a powerful sword at her disposal. This sword was revealed to have the name of Beethoven, and a pun related to this in Japanese can be loosely translated into “military combat whip.” Of course, given that this is a sword, it is made of steel and is actually strong enough to split even rocks. When combined with that Devil Fruit power, it was seen doing great things, such as moving buildings themselves and that’s certainly a very dangerous power.
Inspirations And Influences
Other interesting bits of information that Oda revealed in One Piece SBS volume 107 pertain to characters from other stories that Oda took inspiration from for his own. For instance, Pythagoras, one of the six satellites of Vegapunk was inspired by a popular Japanese TV show called Ganbare RoboCon.
Another character that Oda took inspiration from for one of his own is Jiron Amos from Combat Mecha Xabungle. This character ended up becoming the reference from Jiron of the Revolutionary Army, who was only recently introduced in the story upon Sabo’s arrival in the Kamabakka Kingdom following the events of Lulusia.
Luffy’s Dream
Oda also spoke of Luffy’s dream in SBS volume 107 of One Piece. Fans ask him whether Caribou, who was present on the Straw Hat ship when Luffy revealed his dream to his crew, is also aware of his goals or not. Oda mentioned that Caribou is not aware of Luffy’s dream since he could not hear this bit of information properly. The only people who are currently aware of Luffy’s dream are the Straw Hat Pirates, Sabo, Shanks, Rayleigh, and Yamato. The Straw Hat Pirates heard this dream directly from Luffy himself. Meanwhile, Shanks heard Luffy mention this dream as a kid, and Rayleigh was told by Shanks himself. Yamato hears this dream from Ace, who is no longer alive and, of course, there is Sabo, who is also aware of his goal as Luffy declared it in front of him as a kid.
One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1097, is set to be November 5, 2023.
