One Piece volume 109 is already out and fans are incredibly excited about all the bits of information that they are finding out through the SBS corner. Of course, One Piece volumes always come with a special corner where Oda answers the questions of the fans. Usually, these questions are simply fun, aimed to make the fans laugh.
However, sometimes, Oda answers very important questions in these SBS corners, and that is what makes them truly special. One Piece Volume 109 was no different in this regard and fans truly found out a lot of amazing information this time around, some of which centered around Amazon Lily and Empresses of the island over the years.
The Current Empress Of Amazon Lily – Boa Hancock
Boa Hancock Rules Amazon Lily Right Now
Fans were introduced to the Kuja Tribe of Amazon Lily back during the Amazon Lily arc of One Piece. This was a very short arc, and a part of the Summit War Saga. In this arc, Luffy and the Strawhat Pirates were finding their own way after being separated. Luffy was sent to Amazon Lily, the island of women, by Bartholomew Kuma, and there, he ended up making some great friends, despite having been on odd terms with them at first. Luffy eventually met Hancock, who was revealed to be the Empress of the island. On Amazon Lily, strength is beauty, which means that the most beautiful of all is also the strongest of all. Hancock was revealed to be an incredibly powerful individual, and she was shown to have the power of Mero Mero no Mi.
This is a powerful Paramecia type of Devil Fruit that is essentially one of the most overpowered ones in the entire series as it has the ability of petrifying just about anything. At the same time, it was also revealed that Hancock is a user of all three types of Haki, and given that Kuja specialize in Haki usage, she is most certainly a master of this unique spiritual ability. Fans also got to see quite a lot of other exciting things in the Amazon Lily arc, such as the budding relationship between Luffy and Hancock, which will surely be focused on later down the line again in One Piece.
At the same time, the curious culture of Amazon Lily was also put under quite a lot of focus. Fans did start to wonder why there are only women in Amazon Lily, and why some women sometimes die from love sickness on this island. This was mentioned by Elder Nyon on Amazon Lily, where she said that the Empress before Hancock suffered from this illness too, as did the one before and the one before. Usually, this illness strikes them out of nowhere, and when that happens, the only way to cure it is to go out to the sea. Hancock was suffering from this illness as well, and the only reason why she was able to survive was because she ended up being saved by Luffy. She had fallen in love with the Straw Hat pirate, and being close to him all the time saved her.
The Former Empress Of Amazon Lily – Toritoma
Toritoma Ruled Amazon Lily Before Hancock
In One Piece volume 109 SBS, Oda revealed that the Empress before Hancock ended up dying of lovesickness. This Empress was named Toritoma. Fans also got to see her design, and it is safe to say that she’s one of the prettiest women that Oda has drawn in the entire series. Toritoma had short hair, although it appears to be somewhat curly. At the same time, she had the snake earrings that Hancock wears as well, which might suggest that there is a connection between these two beyond just being Empresses. Regardless, fans also know that Toritoma must have been ridiculously powerful. This doesn’t come as a surprise, given that she was the Empress and, thus, the strongest on the island. Given how strong Shakky was, as well as Elder Nyon, back in the day, it is absolutely beyond any doubt that Toritoma was very powerful as well.
Just like the vast majority of the Kuja warriors, Toritoma is named after a flower as well. In her case, this flower Torch Lily, which, in Japanese, is called Toritoma. The English name for this might be slightly different, however. For those wondering what exactly Oda had to say about Toritoma and the Amazon Lily Empresses, we have the entire question below, answered by Oda himself:
Question: Hello, Odacchi-san! Granny Nyon said that the Empress from two generations ago died from falling madly in love, but the Empress from two generations ago was Shakuyaku! Why did Granny Nyon lie about this?
Oda: This is a matter of reading comprehension. It’s not a lie, what she’s referring to in this line, “The Empress from two generations also…” was talking about the “Love Sickness” that she (also) got! In fact, in the past, the Empresses and Warriors of this country have always died from this sickness without knowing the true reason, but in recent years, Granny Nyon and the others seem to have avoided death by going overseas.
The Empress From 2 Generations Ago – Shakky
Shakky Ruled Amazon Lily Before Toritoma
Before Toritoma, the former Empress of Amazon Lily was, of course, Shakuyaku, who is also known as Shakky. Fans were introduced to her in the story long ago, and it is only now in the Final Saga that Oda revealed her to be a part of the Kuja, and at the same time, a former Empress. She must have been very powerful, given that she clearly mentioned that she was chased around by Garp all the time. At the same time, fans also know that Shakky ended up getting together with Rayleigh, and these two certainly seem to have a tremendous amount of love and respect for each other. Shakky is a ferocious pirate, and her strength is impeccable. Whether she possesses the ability of Conqueror’s Haki or not remains to be seen. What fans know at this point in time is that Shakky, despite being old, is a force to be reckoned with.
Before Shakky, the former Empress of Amazon Lily was none other than Gloriosa, also known as Elder Nyon. Although she might be old, small, and feeble right now, back in the days of the Rocks Pirates, she was a brilliant woman said to be very powerful. Nyon was a part of the Rocks Pirates and one of the strongest at that. Fans know her to be an incredibly overpowered individual who wielded Haki with great control. Hopefully, later down the line, Oda will reveal more bits of information about the amazing warriors of the Kuja tribe, and at the same time, expand upon their role in the future of the story as well, especially now that Hancock has left Amazon Lily and is likely sailing towards where Luffy is right now.
One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1120, is set to be July 14, 2024.
