Sanji is the cook of the Straw Hats and a member of the Monster Trio. He joined the crew in the Baratie arc after Luffy helped to save the restaurant from Don Krieg. Sanji is arguably the most balanced member of the Straw Hat Pirates. He is physically strong and intelligent, which makes it difficult to get the better of him.
Sanji’s journey has been far from normal. He has had to fight many challenging individuals for the sake of his crew. While he prevailed in most of the battles, there were instances where Sanji failed to come out on top. Aside from battles, Sanji has come up short on other occasions, but he learned from his experiences.
6 Failed To Stop Enel
Sanji Couldn’t Do Anything Against Enel
The Skypiea arc was a big challenge for all the Straw Hats. Not only did they have to fight Enel’s priests, but they also had to take on the god of Skypiea himself. The priests, while strong, did not pose much of a threat to the Straw Hats, as the crew could easily hurt them.
However, they couldn’t even scratch Enel, who had a Logia-type Devil Fruit. Only Luffy’s attacks were able to damage Enel, and that was because of his rubbery body. Like the remaining crewmates, Sanji was unable to do any damage to Enel. The villain was aware of it, and he took his time torturing Sanji and the others.
5 Refused To Fight Kalifa
His Morals Nearly Cost Him His Life
Sanji has always been a man of principles. From his very first appearance in the story, he has shown that he does not compromise on his ideals at any cost. Normally, these principles don’t cause a problem for him, but there have been times when Sanji jeopardized the safety of his mission to protect his morals.
When the Straw Hats reached Enies Lobby, they knew that the CP9 would not make life easy for them. While the rest of the crew was busy fighting, Sanji was wasting time against Kalifa. As the latter was a woman, it was against Sanji’s code of honor to hit her. Some might admire Sanji for it, but he could have easily been killed, which would have left the Straw Hats without an integral member. Luckily for him, Nami took over and defeated Kalifa.
4 Nearly Died At The Hands Of Black Maria
Foolishly Walked Into A Trap
Sanji is indubitably one of the smartest characters in One Piece. He has a keen sense of perception, which allows him to plan one step ahead. But he has been known to lose all sense when a woman is involved. Something similar happened in Onigashima, where Black Maria laid a simple trap for Sanji. Normally, he would avoid the trap without any problems, but he walked straight into it after hearing a woman’s scream.
As a result, Black Maria caught him in her web and began to beat him up brutally. Sanji was at her mercy, and he would have died if Nico Robin had not arrived in the nick of time. Robin had to fight Black Maria and beat her because Sanji acted foolishly without thinking.
3 Didn’t Explain His Departure
Left The Crew Hanging
As a child, Sanji suffered at the hands of his father and his siblings. They considered Sanji a failure because of his inability to awaken his genetic powers. Sanji was bullied a lot, which left a deep impact on his mind. Thankfully, he was given an opportunity to escape by Reiju. Not long afterward, Sanji met Zeff and then the Straw Hats.
Everything was going well for him until Judge tried to marry him off to Pudding. Sanji was powerless because Judge knew about Zeff and could have had him killed. So, Sanji went to meet his family. He did not explain to his crew why he was leaving or when exactly he was coming back. This prompted Luffy to go to Big Mom’s island and beat several top-level fighters to force an answer out of Sanji.
2 Dragged His Fight With Bon Clay
Took Too Long To End A Simple Fight
Sanji’s opponent in the Alabasta arc was Bon Clay, also known as Mr. 2. Bon Clay was the third strongest member of the Baroque Works, but he couldn’t hold a candle to Sanji. So, the Straw Hat should have defeated him in mere minutes.
But Bon Clay managed to drag out the fight by using his Mane Mane no Mi power. He altered his face to resemble Nami’s, due to which Sanji couldn’t hit him. This resulted in the latter taking a lot of damage unnecessarily, which could have proven fatal if the fight had continued for longer.
1 Extreme Nosebleeds
Nearly Died Of Nosebleeds
Following their loss at the Sabaody Archipelago, the Straw Hats returned to action after two years of intense training. Fans were excited to see what each member of the crew had learned. The focus was on the Monster Trio, as they are the strongest fighters in the crew. Luffy and Zoro put on an impressive show, while Sanji disappointed the fans with his gag.
Whenever Sanji saw women, he got nosebleeds. It got worse when the Straw Hats docked on Fish-Man Island. Sanji kept losing blood, and it got to the point where he was in serious danger of dying. His mindlessness could have ended his life then and there. This was truly one of his biggest failures.
