The Five Elders, also known as the Gorosei, are some of the most crucial characters in the Final Saga of One Piece. These characters have played an incredible role in the story, and they are the primary antagonists of the egghead Island arc. The Five Elders are going to be incredibly active from here on out, and it is only natural that Oda is focusing that much more on them.

Over the course of the last few chapters, the Five Elders have seen their popularity being shot through the roof, and much of that is down to the focus that Oda has put on them. Finally, the fans are finding out more information pertaining to their powers, and one particular thing that Oda has recently revealed about them and One Piece chapter 1110 has shocked readers. While the vast majority considered to Five Elders to be Devil Fruit users, thanks to their strange transformations, One Piece chapter 1110 has now confirmed that these monstrous fighters do not actually possess a Devil Fruit at all, despite exhibiting the powers of one.

The Power Reveal Of The Five Elders

The Five Elders were introduced to the fans before the 2-year timeskip. Fans had seen quite a lot of these individuals, especially when it came to events that required them to give exposition. The Five Elders were always being saved for the endgame, and that is something that Oda confirmed himself in his interviews as well. As soon as One Piece hit the final saga, fans knew that they were going to be incredibly important. This became true especially when fans saw a flashback of Sabo in the Reverie. There, Sabo witnessed the conversation between Cobra and the Five Elders, and when Cobra was attacked, Sabo decided to jump out to his rescue. He attacked the Elders with a powerful Fire Fist, only to realize that the Five Elders were actually powerful ability users. At the time, Oda only revealed the silhouette of these mystical creatures, with Sabo describing the picture to be something straight out of hell itself.

Later on, as the Egghead Island arc continued, fans got to see the power of the Five Elders being revealed in the most impressive manner. The first member of the Five Elders to have his ability revealed was Saint Saturn. Saturn was sent to Egghead to deal with the Pacifistas as well as see to it that Vegapunk was murdered. Saturn revealed his powers by summoning himself onto Egghead Island. As soon as he summoned himself using a demonic circle, a lot of the fans suspected that he might not actually be a Devil Fruit user. Furthermore, the ability that he showed belongs to that of a Yokai. In a very shocking manner, Saturn was revealed to have the power of the Ushi Oni.

Usually, when Oda reveals an ability, he drops its name. However, sometimes, that is not the case. In the case of Saturn, it could simply have been that Oda did not reveal the Devil Fruit at the time. However, what is even stranger was the fact that Saturn’s abilities did not seem to match any Devil Fruit criteria. Furthermore, his incredibly insane regeneration rate was something demonic and that, when combined with everything else about his Devil Fruit, gave the fans an idea that he was an actual demon, instead of just someone with a Devil Fruit power.

The Yokai Forms Of The Five Elders

In One Piece chapter 1110, Oda finally revealed the power of all the Five Elders together. It was this particular scene that confirmed to the fans that the Five Elders were not Devil Fruit users. The Five Elders all managed to reunite on Egghead Island, thanks to Saint Saturn. He used the power of the summoning circles to summon the remaining Elders on Egghead. As he did that, in a majestic spread, fans so all of their Yokai forms at once. Oda then went on to reveal which member of the Five Elders held what ability. Saint Saturn was revealed to have the power of the Gyuki, Marcus Mars was revealed to have the power of the Itsumade, Saint Warcury was shown to have the power of the Fengxi, V. Nusjuro was revealed to have the power of the Bakotsu, and finally, Jupiter was shown to have the power of the Sandworm.

What was incredibly clear here was the fact that Oda did not reveal them to have Devil Fruit forms. Instead, Oda simply revealed their Yokai powers. They were referred to as their Yokai transformations, which clearly implies that these are not Devil Fruit eaters. They are actually these beasts in their true forms, which makes things quite strange.

Why The Gorosei Are Not Devil Fruit Users

Fans have been speculating for quite a while as to whether the Five Elders were Devil Fruit users or if they were actual demons. One Piece chapter 1110 confirms them to be non-Devil Fruit users, and actual demonic entities. This is intriguing in many ways. For one, it implies that the Five Elders did not consume Devil Fruits. However, the power that they have certainly does resemble that of the Devil Fruits. This means that they might actually have received the power of these almighty creatures through other means. This would essentially erase the weakness to sea that all Devil Fruit users have.

At the same time, their Yokai transformation seems to come with special abilities. For one, they can communicate with each other through telepathy. Secondly, they can use the powers of the summoning circles, which is clearly demonic in nature. Finally, they have very sinister abilities, such as their uncanny regeneration power. No matter how much they are damaged, they can regenerate as if nothing happened to them in the first place. These are not powers that Devil Fruits usually showcase, and clear proof of the fact that they are something else.

Naturally, fans would wonder as to what the source of these demonic powers is. This all ties back to the sovereign of the world, Imu. It is likely that Imu themselves has bestowed the Five Elders with these powers. This would make sense, especially when taking into consideration the fact that the Five Elders are supposed to be Imu’s personal guard. Oda went into some detail about how Devil Fruits were created in the Egghead Island arc, and it seems that, for the Five Elders, this process was somewhat altered by Imu.

That would explain why they have powers that look like Devil Fruit abilities on the surface, but are much stronger and more sinister, possibly without the side effects. All of this ties back to Imu, and that makes these powerful Elders that much more interesting, and, at the same time, it also adds more intrigue to Imu’s character, who fans now want to see even more of.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1111, is set to be March 24, 2024.
