Over the years, fans have seen Zoro and Sanji take up various interesting roles in the series, and deliver emphatically. While doing this, they have also gone on to become some of the favorite characters of the fans. Of course, Zoro and Sanji share a rivalry between them, however, their relationship goes deeper than this rivalry and the Wings of the Pirate King issue of the One Piece magazine certainly highlights that very well.
Sanji And Zoro’s Relationship
Sanji And Zoro Start Off As Bitter Rivals In One Piece
When looking at Zoro and Sanji’s relationship on a surface level, fans might come to the conclusion that they actually hate each other. For one, Zoro and Sanji are always arguing. These two are like oil and water, and right from the beginning of the Arlong Park Arc, they have been at each other’s throats due to their different mentalities. Zoro and Sanji then developed a rivalry with each other, and this rivalry flamed even more during the events of the Little Garden arc. There, Oda established the dynamics very well while these two were dinosaur hunting. From there onwards, their rivalry took another spin, and they have even engaged in battle with each other on many occasions, although in a comedic manner. While on the surface, both Zoro and Sanji feel annoyed at the presence of the other, deep down, their relationship is very special. One needs to look beyond the surface level to actually see the depth of their relationship.
Oda has highlighted their relationship to be special on many occasions in the story, such as in the Thriller Bark Arc, where Sanji showed special care for Zoro. Something similar happened in the Sabaody Archipelago Arc as well. In the post timeskip of One Piece, fans have also gotten several incredible moments between these two. More specifically, in the Wano Country arc, Zoro and Sanji shared a very deep moment, where Sanji entrusted Zoro with the job of killing him if he strayed from his path and abandoned all his principles following his Germa transformation. Meanwhile, Zoro wished Sanji the best, and eventually, even went as far as to claim that he came back from death just to fulfill his promise to kill the cook of the Straw Hats.
What Zoro Thinks Of Sanji
Zoro’s True Thoughts About Sanji Are Nothing But Positive
One Piece magazine volume 18 highlights several instances in the manga where Zoro and Sanji have showcased their true feelings towards each other. When it comes to Zoro’s feelings for Sanji, fans know that he often calls him the love cook and is mildly annoyed by his behavior. However, all that is what Zoro shows on the surface level. His true feelings for Sanji or something entirely different.
The very first thing that One Piece magazine highlights when it comes to Zoro’s view of Sanji is that he trusts his cooking fully. Regardless of what Zoro has to say about Sanji, he will never ever disrespect his food. Even when Zoro challenges Sanji to do things like putting blades in his food so he can digest them, he eats them with gusto.
The second thing that the One Piece magazine highlights is the fact that Zoro is concerned about Sanji, for one reason or another. While different fans may have different views on why Zoro is so concerned about Sanji, the bottom line is that he does care deeply about him, even though he doesn’t show it on the surface. An example of this was back in Zou, where Zoro, upon hearing about Sanji’s predicament, started to worry, which Luffy saw through quite easily.
Calm down! Curly Brows Is with them. He wouldn’t let anyone die!
One Piece Magazine also highlights the fact that Zoro believes Sanji to be a worthy rival. He completely acknowledges the fact that Sanji is very strong. This is highlighted once again when Zoro clearly mentions that Sanji being with the crew is as good at reassurance as one can get, because he is just that powerful, and with him around, no one has to worry about the crewmates getting hurt at all.
What Sanji Thinks Of Zoro
Sanji’s Views On Zoro Are Endearing
Just like One Piece magazine highlighted what Zoro thinks about Sanji, it also did the same for Sanji as well. Fans know that Sanji has always shown a deep care for Zoro. Even though Zoro has never actually used Sanji’s real name, the reverse isn’t true. There are instances in the story where Sanji has resorted to using Zoro’s real name, especially when things are very serious and he’s worried about the swordsman of the ship. This is further strengthened by the fact that Sanji is, at his core, a very kind character. For him, putting on a tough exterior in front of Zoro is a given. Deep down, however, Sanji cares about Zoro just as much as anyone else, and in some cases, even more than others.
What good is dying gonna do you? What about your ambition, you idiot? Hey, big guy! Rather than this moss-head swordsman… take my life instead!
In fact, Sanji even values Zoro above his own life. This was highlighted in Thriller Bark, and the One Piece magazine points that out as well. Zoro’s ambition of becoming the best in the world is very important to Sanji. Just like Sanji values Luffy’s dream of becoming the Pirate King, he also values Zoro’s dream of becoming the Strongest Swordsman. For this reason, he is willing to give himself up to Kuma and ensure that Zoro goes on to become the Strongest Swordsman in the future because the green-haired swordsman is just too important to him.
The One Piece magazine also points out that Sanji often worries about Zoro, because he knows that Zoro fights with his life on the line at all times. Zoro could potentially have died in any battle that he fought in One Piece. Sanji knows that in order to become the best, Zoro often pushes himself way too much and this puts him in dangerous situations. For this reason, Sanji always worries about him and even though he doesn’t show it, his mind is preoccupied with Zoro’s safety.
Perhaps the thing that shows Sanji trusts in Zoro with his eyes closed is the fact that he would even entrust the safety of a lady with him. To Sanji, protecting women is the most important thing of all. The fact is that Sanji would entrust the safety of any woman with Zoro and this just goes to show that he has complete faith in him. The One Piece magazine highlights the moment on Punk Hazard as an example of this. There, when Tashigi was with Zoro, Sanji put his trust in him completely, saying that even though he has a hard shell on the outside, Zoro is softer than anyone else would imagine. This also goes to show that Sanji knows Zoro better than just about any individual in One Piece. Their relationship is truly special and Oda has created quite easily the best duo in the entire series with these two.
One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1117, is set to be June 17, 2024.
