One Piece: Jewelry Bonney’s Toshi Toshi no Mi, Explained

Highlights

  • Jewelry Bonney’s Devil Fruit power, known as Toshi Toshi no Mi, allows her to manipulate the ages of objects and people when she makes physical contact.
  • Bonney’s powers can be channeled through weapons she carries, extending her range and making her a formidable opponent.
  • While Bonney has yet to unlock the potential of her awakened Devil Fruit, her role in the final saga of One Piece suggests that she may become a crucial character with increased screen time.

Jewelry Bonney is one of the members of the Worst Generation. She was introduced in the Sabaody Archipelago arc, along with the rest of the Supernovas. At the time, Bonney looked like one of the less important characters, but that impression has changed over time. While she was still in Sabaody, Bonney gave fans a glimpse of her ability.

She was able to alter the age of the Marines who wanted to capture her. Bonney turned them into kids and old people, rendering them incapable of fighting. While it was obvious that Bonney had some kind of Devil Fruit ability, the name of the power was kept under wraps. Oda decided that it was better to keep it hidden. In One Piece SBS 107, the author of One Piece finally drew the curtain from this long-standing mystery and revealed the name of Bonney’s Devil Fruit.

Bonney’s Devil Fruit is called the Toshi Toshi no Mi. It is a Paramecia-type that can manipulate the ages of objects and people. In order to use the Devil Fruit, Bonney’s hands need to make contact with the object or person. This is rather an easy condition to meet, especially with an unsuspecting enemy. But those who are aware of Bonney’s powers don’t have much trouble dodging her attacks.

Blackbeard, who managed to capture Bonney after the Summit War, had chained her hands to a post. It implies that she requires her hands to utilize her Devil Fruit powers. Bonney’s Toshi Toshi no Mi also allows her to tap into alternate futures. During the Egghead arc, Bonney used this particular ability to buff herself up while chasing Vegapunk. Bonney’s abilities can also be channeled through any weapon that she carries. This is another advantage of her Devil Fruit, and it extends her range, making it extremely useful.

Toshi Toshi no Mi Awakening

Like all Devil Fruits, Toshi Toshi no Mi can be awakened, but Bonney has yet to master it. It is highly unlikely that Bonney has unlocked the Awakening because she mainly uses her Devil Fruit to get out of trouble. In order to awaken a Devil Fruit, characters often spend years training with it. So far, the only characters with Awakened Devil Fruits are those who are extremely strong. Clearly, it is not a coincidence, which further implies that Bonney is not an Awakened Devil Fruit user.

However, there is no denying that Bonney remains a potential candidate. Judging from her role in the Egghead arc, it is possible that Bonney may be one of the most important characters in the final saga of One Piece. This means that she will have more screen time, which increases the possibility of her awakening the Toshi Toshi no Mi.

When Bonney is emotionally overwhelmed, she loses control over her powers. Due to this reason, people and objects get their ages changed uncontrollably. If Bonney awakens her Devil Fruit, it is likely that she can alter ages without making any kind of physical contact. Also, mastering the Devil Fruit will allow her to test out more future alternative versions. The effects of her powers might also increase.

Bonney’s Role In The Final Saga

The Straw Hats met Jewelry Bonney in the Egghead arc. She had made minor appearances after the Sabaody Archipelago arc, but it wasn’t until the final saga that Oda began to utilize her more in the story. After meeting Luffy, she told him that the reason behind her voyage to Egghead was Dr. Vegapunk. She believed that the genius scientist was responsible for turning her father, Bartholomew Kuma, into a mindless cyborg. When she met Vegapunk, there was a great deal of hatred inside her, and it was visible on her face. Bonney wanted answers, and she wanted them as quickly as possible. This was evident from her behavior in the presence of Vegapunk.

Bonney has been chased after by the World Government for a long time, and it may have been due to her lineage. Recently, it was confirmed that Kuma is a descendant of the Buccaneer clan. In the past, around the time of the Void Century, the Buccaneer clan committed a grave crime against the World Government. Due to this, they are forced to hide to avoid prosecution. Many fans also believe that Joyboy belonged to the Buccaneer clan, which would explain why the World Government despises them so much. After the organization found out about Kuma and his family, they enslaved all of them. Kuma’s mother died tragically, and later on, his father was shot by a Celestial Dragon.

Given how badly they treated Kuma and his parents, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they wanted Bonney to suffer the same fate. One thing is for certain: Bonney is quickly shaping up to be one of the most important characters in the final saga of One Piece.
