In a world as expansive as that of One Piece, there are tons of races, parties, and organizations all vying for power or the pursuit of their goals. The biggest ones are those that everyone knows about; namely the World Government, the Navy, the Revolutionary Army, etc. However, one of the lesser-known ones, which also happens to be one of the most important, is the elusive army known as Germa 66.
While nothing was known about them before the Zou and Whole Cake Island arcs of One Piece, they actually played a huge role in the backstory of one of the most important characters in the entire story, Sanji. So, with this in mind, let’s take a look at the organization known as Germa 66 and break down why they’re so important to not only Sanji’s arc but all of One Piece.

The Whole Cake Island arc introduced the elusive organization known as Germa 66 to the world. This organization is not only the military branch of the powerful Germa Kingdom, but it also acts as an underground army of mercenaries that is directly controlled by the ruling family of the kingdom, the Vinsmoke Family. Germa 66 is known mostly for being the main antagonist in a comic strip published in the World Economic Journal.
Due to this existence in a comic strip, many in the world deny their existence as a whole, considering them to be a mythical evil army. However, Germa 66 is well-known in the underground as well as in the many nations that they have history in, such as when they were involved in the Conquest of Four Nations which saw the death of 4 kings within the North Blue. On the other hand, Germa 66 also works as an army of mercenaries, as can be seen when they were hired by one side of Broc Coli Island to destroy the other side.
The thing that the organization is known for is its futuristic technology, the likes of which can’t be found anywhere else. This technology is put to use in warfare and is continually being improved, which is the reason why an alliance with them was so sought after by Big Mom since she wanted the power of the Germa Kingdom to enhance her own military might.
This technological prowess, mixed with their immense military might, makes the Germa Kingdom a true force to be reckoned with. They’ve been shown to have the power to topple entire nations within the span of a few hours, and they have also undertaken the rare step of crossing the Red Line to get from the North Blue to the East Blue.
Hierarchy of Germa 66
The one who stands at the very top of the entire operation is known as the Supreme Commander of Germa 66, a position which is currently filled by Sanji’s father, Vinsmoke Judge. Though he’s a capable warrior, Judge’s true power lies in his brilliant scientific mind, which allowed him to be a part of MADS under Dr. Vegapunk. His research and help were imperative in finding the Lineage Factor, something that he put into full use when it came to designing Germa’s clone army as well as their famous Raid Suits.
The true reason why Germa’s military might is so staggering is because of their scientific prowess, which allowed them to make an entirely disposable army of clone soldiers. These soldiers have undying loyalty to the Germa Kingdom and would give their lives in an instant to protect the family. Moreover, there were also experiments undertaken on Judge’s own children to transform them into genetically modified soldiers who are far superior to regular humans in almost every way.
You are to serve as a means to an end Sanji, nothing more. Just so we’re clear, I still and never will see a fool like you as a son of mine… not in the slightest.
The eldest of these siblings is Vinsmoke Reiju. She is much like her younger brothers in the sense that she carries out her father’s orders without fail and has superior physical abilities due to her genetic modifications. However, unlike them, she still carries her emotions, which is why she feels love and sympathy for Sanji, allowing him to escape from Germa’s clutches when the chance arose. After her, there are the Vinsmoke quadruplets; Ichiji, Niji, Sanji, and Yonji.
Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji are much like their older sister in terms of abilities but have been stripped of their emotions, making them the perfect killing machines. Sanji, however, had no difference made to his skills and physiology due to the genetic modifications, retaining his emotions and behaving like a regular human for all of his childhood. This led to the entire family tormenting him and calling him a failure, leading to him running away to Baratie when he got the chance.
