The Straw Hat Pirates are different from the other crews in One Piece in more ways than one. For starters, they are more harmonious than the rest and care deeply about each other. The crew members have put their lives on the line for the sake of each other.
So, it won’t be an exaggeration to call them a family instead of a bunch of crewmates. In fact, Oda has disclosed the roles each Straw Hat would have if they were a family.
The list is based on the latest set of Vivre Cards.
Jimbei
Role: Father
Luffy and Jimbei met for the first time in Impel Down, where they allied to stop Ace’s execution. In Marineford, Jimbei saved Luffy’s life and, in the aftermath, helped him emerge from the shock of losing his brother.
Jimbei has many fatherly qualities, which have been exhibited throughout the story. For instance, he went out of his way to come to help Zoro against Rob Lucci, as he was aware that lingering there for too long could be costly. He can be firm and loving, as evidenced by his interaction with the Straw Hats.
Brook
Role: Grandfather
Brook used to be a member of the Rumbar Pirates, but he died due to poisoning. Luckily, his Yomi Yomi no Mi brought him back, giving him a second shot at life. After wandering alone for years, Brook ends up on Luffy’s crew.
As the oldest crew member, Brook is given the role of the grandfather. Like many old men in anime, Brook has a pervy nature and cracks jokes. However, when it is time to be serious, he isn’t afraid to stand up to an Emperor of the Sea.
Franky
Role: Grandmother
Franky is the shipwright for the crew. It is his job to ensure that the Thousand Sunny is in top condition and isn’t facing any issues. Franky also has an aptitude for battle, as proven by his father against Sasaki, who had an Ancient Zoan-type Devil Fruit.
Before Jimbei joined the crew, Franky was assigned the role of father among the Straw Hats. Since then, it has been changed to grandmother.
Nico Robin
Role: Mother
Nico Robin ended up as a crew member after Luffy defeated Crocodile in Alabasta. At first, some of the Straw Hats were skeptical of Robin and her intentions, but eventually, they all opened up and welcomed her as a part of the crew.
Nico Robin is one of the oldest characters in the crew, and she has a great deal of knowledge. The Straw Hats can trust her to take the lead in a dangerous situation, and they trust the calls that she makes.
Tony Tony Chopper
Role: Youngest Child
Chopper’s ability to talk and behave like humans is a result of him eating the Hito Hito no Mi. For a human, this Devil Fruit would have been almost useless, but for Chopper, it was nothing short of a blessing.
The Straw Hats treat Chopper with the utmost love and care. In fact, he gets away with mischief more often than not. Chopper is extremely fond of compliments, and he blushes a lot after receiving one.
Sanji
Role: Second Son
Sanji joined the crew after Luffy and his friends helped defend Baratie from the assault of Don Krieg and his minions. He departed from Baratie only after Zeff pressured him. Ever since joining the crew, Sanji has been pivotal to their success. In almost every arc, Sanji has not only taken down an enemy but also set up escape routes for his friends to leave with their lives.
According to the latest Vivre Card set, Sanji would be the second son of the family. This makes sense considering Sanji has a more humorous side to him. He is less uptight than Zoro and is more prone to doing something comedic.
Usopp
Role: Third Son
With his aptitude for sniping, it is hardly surprising that Usopp is the sniper for the Straw Hat Pirates. He has awakened Observation Haki, but he doesn’t seem to have full control over it. The upcoming arcs will present big tests for Usopp, and he must train harder to pass.
As it stands, Usopp is neither strong nor brave. He is known for running away at the first sight of danger, along with other scaredy-cats like Nami and Chopper. According to Oda, Usopp would be the third son if the Straw Hats were a family.
Nami
Role: Eldest Daughter
Nami has the all-important job of navigating the Straw Hats across the world. Without her guidance, the crew would never have made it this far. Nami is smart, and she is able to predict the weather in little to no time.
Nami does not like fighting, but she has proven herself to be a capable combatant. While she is not the oldest member of the crew, everyone respects her decisions. Even the captain tries not to get on her bad side.
Roronoa Zoro
Role: Eldest Son
Roronoa Zoro is a member of the Monster Trio, along with Sanji and Luffy. The trio has been responsible for the defeat of some of the most notable pirates in One Piece.
Zoro is an ambitious man who wants to become the strongest swordsman in the world. He is dedicated to his goal, and he’s willing to make the biggest sacrifices. Zoro is said to be the eldest son of the family, which makes sense considering he has shown that he can lead in Luffy’s absence.
Monkey D. Luffy
Role: Fourth Son
Luffy is the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, and under his guidance, they have managed to become one of the most feared crews in One Piece. Currently, Luffy is an Emperor of the Sea, making him part of a special list of pirates.
While he may be the captain, Luffy’s designated role in the family would be the fourth son. He is young and not beyond causing mischief on the ship.
