Approaching the two-year mark in its publication with more than 60 chapters released till date, the Egghead Arc has more than lived up to expectations as the introduction to the Final Saga of One Piece. With no shortage of earth-shattering developments across its duration of serialization, this arc has seen Eiichiro Oda at the peak of his powers, delivering thrilling battles and shocking revelations in rapid succession.
With the arc’s major conflict seemingly approaching its end, as the Straw Hat Pirates and their allies push to flee World Government’s invasion of Egghead Island, it appears as if One Piece may finally be heading into its next story arc. Keeping this in mind, is it about to assume that the Egghead Arc is nearing its inevitable conclusion?
How Long Has The Egghead Arc Been?
Currently, as of One Piece Chapter 1120, the Egghead Arc is tied with the Arabasta Arc as the fifth-longest story arc in One Piece, at a total of 63 chapters. While it is almost certain to exceed this number, this arc may even overtake Skypiea at 66 chapters if the story does not wrap up within the next 4-5 chapters. Notwithstanding this, the sheer number of major global events that have taken place within this arc is staggering, even in spite of its now sizable length.
After the introduction of the seven Vegapunks and the Seraphim, the Egghead Arc switched its gaze to events across the world of One Piece. Firstly, it elaborated on the fates of the other Supernovas who fought alongside Luffy: Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law. Kid was defeated by Shanks near the shores of Elbaf, whereas Law’s crew fell against Blackbeard, and he barely managed to escape with his life.
Next, the scene shifts to Garp’s mission to rescue Koby from the Blackbeard Pirates on Hachinosu, where he encounters his old student Kuzan — formerly known as Admiral Aokiji. Simultaneously, it also focuses on Sabo’s report to his Revolutionary Army superiors about his escapades during the Levely. This sequence provided some important hints about the power wielded by the Five Elders and Imu, setting up events to come.
Finally, the siege of Egghead Island and the Straw Hat Pirates’ battle against Admiral Kizaru and the Five Elders provided some of the most thrilling confrontations in the series so far, with a few long-awaited match ups that did not disappoint. Additionally, the secrets of Bartholomew Kuma’s past, and his relationship with Bonney were the focus of a flashback sequence that can be ranked among One Piece’s most tragic and heart-wrenching. The very climax of this arc was a chaotic mess in all the right ways, underscored by Dr. Vegapunk’s final message, which divulged some hard-to-swallow truths about the world of One Piece.
The Ramifications Of All Events So Far
Needless to say, everything that has happened in the Egghead Arc has sent ripples throughout the One Piece world, altering the balance of power within the New World while contributing to the World Government’s declining authority. A large part of the latter change can be attributed to Vegapunk’s broadcast, which shed light on why knowledge of the Void Century had been suppressed for so long. Simultaneously, the events across the Ne World involving the Worst Generation, the Four Emperors, and the Marines, have created a scenario where multiple parties are now directly attempting to claim the One Piece, as the story approaches its last stretch.
The Egghead Arc has also set up events for the next phase of the Final Saga, by revealing the whereabouts of Jaguar D. Saul, alongside the salvaged texts from the Library of Ohara which contain the scholars’ research into the Void Century. Besides this, the appearance of the Five Elders on Egghead Island, along with the reveal of their mysterious demonic powers and regenerative abilities, have set a terrifying precedent for the kind of opponents that Luffy will now have to face.
The Straw Hats Finally Begin Their Escape
Presently, most of Vegapunk’s satellites have been eliminated alongside his main body, the Stella. The only two remaining satellites are York — who is an ally of the Five Elders — and Lilith, the first Vegapunk to be introduced, who is now in the custody of the Straw Hat Pirates. Moreover, the arrival of the Giant Warrior Pirates on Egghead, all but indicates that it is time to bid goodbye to the island of the future.
While virtually all the Straw Hats have boarded their escape vessels in Chapter 1120 — the Thousand Sunny and the Giant Warrior Pirates’ ship — there are still a few last skirmishes they will have to weather before fleeing the island. For starters, Saint Jaygarcia Saturn’s arrival on the Giant Warrior Pirates’ ship is sure to stall Luffy and the giants for some time, since they now have to either repel or incapacitate him before leaving the island for good.
At the same time, the mysterious Iron Giant from the Void Century — whose name was revealed to be Emet — also appears to be hiding some sort of trump card given to them by Joy Boy. In tandem with this, Vegapunk’s transmission seems to finally be winding up, as he notes that he has reached the same conclusion as the Roger Pirates, regarding what they found on the island of Laugh Tale.
Cumulatively, all signs point to the fact that there may only be a few more chapters until the Egghead Arc comes to a close in the One Piece manga, after nearly two years of incredible developments and revelations. Regarding where the story is headed next, there will be little doubt in anyone’s mind that the time has arrived for the Straw Hat Pirates to visit the home of the giants.
When Will The Crew Reach Elbaf’s Shores?
Depending on how many more fights remain before the Straw Hats and Giant Warrior Pirates escape, there may be less than 10 chapters to go until One Piece has another change of scene to the island of Elbaf. With everything that has taken place on Egghead, there are considerably high expectations for this upcoming arc, especially since it may feature two long-awaited reunions between Luffy and Shanks, as well as Nico Robin and Jaguar D. Saul. Hence, unless another drastic turn of events takes place, the crew might arrive in Elbaf within the next couple of months of One Piece’s serialization.
