One Piece has given each of the Straw Hat Pirates plenty of foes to square off against, but an enemy doesn’t need to be a big-name villain to garner a deep-seated hatred for a story’s characters. Luffy may be the central protagonist of One Piece, but his crew each have a very fleshed-out backstory, including the crew’s cook, Sanji.
While some villains have a reason to hate the entire Straw Hat Pirate crew, Sanji has had run-ins with certain individuals that have given them a reason to despise him more than any other member. Some of these reasons are well deserved, some are not his fault at all, and some have even been reconciled.
6 Duval
Looks Like Sanji’s First Wanted Poster
Sanji’s first ever wanted poster in the series was the source of much comic relief due to the image looking nothing like Sanji, but at the same time, having all of his iconic markers. Unfortunately, this wanted poster looked identical to that of a completely unrelated person. This would be Duval, leader of the Flying Fish Riders, and due to looking exactly like the wanted poster, he was targeted by the Marines and bounty hunters. While not one of the best One Piece villains, he is one worth remembering.
Duval expressed an utter hatred for Sanji, swearing to murder both him and his entire crew because of all the trouble he’d caused via his wanted poster. While his hatred of Sanji may have been intense, Duval would end up becoming a loyal ally to the Straw Hat Pirates — even protecting the Thousand Sunny as the Rosy Life Riders after the events at Sabaody Archipelago. This newfound respect would come from Sanji delivering an attack that would reconstruct Duval’s face into something he could only describe as ‘handsome.’
5 Big Mom
Hates All Of The Straw Hats, Sanji Included
Due to everything that went down during the Whole Cake Island saga, Big Mom has a sizable grudge against the entire Straw Hat crew, Sanji included. Big Mom is a character that has been shown to hold a grudge, dating all the way back to her time served on the ship of Rocks D. Xebec. While she was able to mend her relationship with her former crewmate Kaido, the same cannot be said for the Straw Hats.
Sanji not marrying her daughter, Charlotte Pudding, meant she was not able to get her hands on the cloning technology she wanted from Germa 66. Big Mom has many impressive victories under her belt, and crossing her is one of the most dangerous actions performed by the Straw Hats — especially with so many powerful family members to fight for her, even in the event of her death.
4 Sanji’s Brothers
Genetically Modified For Their Father’s Ambitions
Sanji may very well have the worst family dynamics among any of the Straw Hat Pirates. His father experimented on his own children so that he could have powerful commanders to achieve his own goals. These experiments left his brothers without empathy, able to laugh off their own impending demise, and showing no compassion to those they wronged. Each of his brothers has been shown to look down on Sanji, and tormented him growing up. At the slightest sign of him standing up to them, they expressed intense annoyance towards him.
The only time they would aid Sanji would be helping him and the Straw Hats make their escape from Whole Cake Island. This was not out of kindness, but only to repay the debt of their lives being saved, as well as get their revenge against the Charlotte Family for their betrayal. As for his father, Vinsmoke Judge seems more disappointed in Sanji than expressing a form of hatred, seeing him as a failure his whole life — only to be proven wrong during the escape from Whole Cake Island. The only living member of his family that he is on good terms with is his sister, Reiju.
3 Charlotte Perospero
Blames Sanji For The Events Of The Tea Party
Perospero is the eldest son of the Charlotte family and has a very obscured view of reality. He fully believes those who defy Big Mom, no matter the circumstances, are in the wrong. Furthermore, he blames Sanji directly for the plan to steal the Germa 66 technology — by not letting himself get shot by Pudding as intended. While Whole Cake Island looks like something out of a Lewis Carroll book, Perospero and other characters throughout One Piece have drawn on many literary sources for inspiration.
Sanji would then free his father and siblings from Perospero’s candy bindings. It is hard to tell whether Big Mom or Perospero holds a larger grudge against Sanji, but Perospero’s malicious personality and skewed worldview would make one consider the ball in his favor.
2 Absalom
Had His Wedding Ruined By Sanji
Absalom is one of the two pre-timeskip characters to make it on this list, with the first being Duval. He appears in the Thrillerbark Arc as one of the antagonists of the Straw Hats and develops an infatuation for Nami — going so far as to attempt making her his bride. While Sanji is directly to blame for ruining his wedding, the two of them share a lot of similar personality traits when it comes to seeing women they deem attractive — both becoming bewildered over seeing Nami in a wedding dress.
This hatred is not one-sided, as Sanji blames Absalom for denying him his dream of eating an underrated Devil Fruit, the Clear-Clear fruit — which grants one the ability to turn invisible. However, Sanji would still be able to achieve this feat thanks to the power of the Raid Suit he obtains much later in the story.
1 Page One
Sanji Beat Him & Escaped
While Sanji’s climactic fight in one of the longest-running Arcs, Wano, was against the Lead Performer known as Queen, the headliner known as Page One has a far deeper gripe with the cook. While destroying a section of the Flower Capital, Sanji stood up to Page One and used the Raid Suit given to him by his father — this came during their escape from Whole Cake Island.
Sanji proceeds to increasingly anger Page One by using the powers of the Raid Suit to best him in combat. Not only was he not able to beat Sanji in the fight, but Sanji was able to completely elude capture to add to his humiliation.
