One Piece: 5 Characters Who Hate Blackbeard The Most

Highlights

  • Blackbeard’s rise to power in One Piece has made him one of the most notorious figures in the New World.
  • Characters like Bonney, Hancock, and Ace hold deep grudges against Blackbeard for various reasons.
  • Luffy sees Blackbeard as his arch-nemesis, with their contrasting values and past conflicts driving their rivalry.

From his humble beginnings as a relatively minor crew member of the Whitebeard Pirates, Blackbeard — whose real name is Marshall D. Teach — has quickly risen to become one of the most powerful figures in the One Piece world. As the holder of the second-highest bounty among the current generation of the Four Emperors, Blackbeard has gained immense notoriety within the New World.

His meteoric ascent to prominence has been quite eventful, given how many enemies he has made along the way. This is no small part due to his deplorable scheming, which allows him to obtain exactly what he wants from every major conflict within the world of One Piece, without having to risk too much in the process. Consequently, there are quite a few people who detest Blackbeard and his ideology, including some of his other rivals within the New World.

1 Jewelry Bonney

Manga Debut

One Piece Chapter #498 “The Eleven Supernovas”

Anime Debut

One Piece Episode #392 “New Rivals Gather! The 11 Supernovas”

Bonney is one of the few One Piece characters who does not fear Blackbeard in the slightest, given how she openly insulted him before his crew even when she was completely at his mercy. Her initial grudge stemmed from his role in instigating the Summit War of Marineford by capturing and handing Ace over to the Marines.

Not too long after, Bonney was ambushed and captured by Blackbeard, who defeated the Bonney Pirates and offered her the opportunity to be his lover — although he was unaware that she was actually a child disguised as an adult. In all this, Blackbeard’s primary motive was to hold Bonney hostage to acquire a ship from the Marines, and he quickly lost interest in her when she physically attacked him in response to his proposal.

2 Boa Hancock

Regards Blackbeard As Her Mortal Enemy

Manga Debut

One Piece Chapter #516 “Pirate Empress Boa Hancock”

Anime Debut

One Piece Episode #409 “Hurry! Back to the Crew – Adventure on the Isle of Women”

Primarily because of his role in Ace’s death, Boa Hancock harbors unbridled hatred towards Blackbeard, viewing him as the cause of all the grief that Luffy suffered following the Summit War of Marineford. Not too long after, she gained an even more personal reason to despise Blackbeard, when he invaded Amazon Lily after the Seven Warlords System was abolished.

After defeating her as well as her forces, Blackbeard was on the verge of killing Hancock to steal her coveted Devil Fruit, the Mero Mero no Mi. At the same time, she had petrified members of his crew, and urged him to spare her life, noting that they would remain stone statues forever in the event of her death. Unfazed, Blackbeard declared that he did not care for his subordinates, but the timely arrival of Silvers Rayleigh forced him to retreat, saving Hancock from his clutches in the process.

3 Portgas D. Ace

Sought To Punish Blackbeard For Killing Thatch

Manga Debut

One Piece Chapter #154 “To Arabasta”

Anime Debut

One Piece Episode #91 “Farewell, Drum Island! I’m Going Out to Sea!”

Once Teach’s commanding officer in the Whitebeard Pirates’ Second Division, Portgas D. Ace used to have an amicable relationship with his subordinate, despite Blackbeard having been part of the crew for a longer period. All this changed when Teach murdered his crewmate Thatch to acquire the Yami Yami no Mi, prompting Ace to pursue him to deliver the appropriate punishment for what he had done.

Following a lengthy search, Ace managed to track Blackbeard and his new crew to Banaro Island, where the latter tried to get him to join his crew — an attempt that failed spectacularly when Ace learned that Blackbeard was also hunting Luffy. In the ensuing battle, Blackbeard emerged triumphant and handed Ace over to the World Government in exchange for being granted the status of a Warlord, which effectively condemned the Whitebeard Pirates’ Second Division Commander to death and started the Paramount War.

4 Monkey D. Luffy

Blackbeard’s Arch-Nemesis And Polar Opposite

Manga Debut

One Piece Chapter #1 “Romance Dawn – The Dawn of the Adventure”

Anime Debut

One Piece Episode #1 “I’m Luffy! The Man Who Will Become the Pirate King!”

While Blackbeard is also a firm believer in dreams and fate, he has often been depicted as a sinister reflection of Luffy, and this becomes quite clear upon comparing their respective ambitions and ideologies. Blackbeard is far more cruel and deceitful in his methods, which starkly contrasts Luffy’s kindness and compassion.

Luffy also blames Blackbeard for Ace’s death to some extent, and he nearly forgot his mission in Impel Down on encountering Teach, who revealed that he was the one who handed his brother over to the Marines. Even though Blackbeard harbors some respect for Luffy, the feeling is not mutual. The negative sentiments Luffy felt toward Blackbeard were exacerbated even further after the latter’s attack on Baltigo, along with the Blackbeard Pirates’ attempt to claim the Mera Mera no Mi during the Dressrosa Arc.

5 Shanks

Has Seen Blackbeard As A Threat For Years

Manga Debut

One Piece Chapter #1 “Romance Dawn – The Dawn of the Adventure”

Anime Debut

One Piece Episode #4 “Luffy’s Past! The Red-Haired Shanks Appears”

The animosity between Blackbeard and Shanks stretches back decades, to when they were members of the Whitebeard Pirates and Roger Pirates, respectively. Before the start of One Piece, Shanks fought against Blackbeard, and it was during this battle that he gained his trademark facial scar, which led him to take the threat he posed much more seriously.

Even after Teach’s defection from the Whitebeard Pirates, Shanks continued to monitor his activities, and also warned Whitebeard to stop Ace from chasing after him, believing that he was not ready to face Teach — a statement that was proved true. When he arrived at the Summit War of Marineford, Shanks was the only one who spoke to Blackbeard with urgency in his voice, seeing him as a major source of potential danger. Presently, it seems as if he is trying to track down Teach, with little success.
