One Piece: Can Bonney’s Distorted Future Copy Other Devil Fruits?

Highlights

  • Jewelry Bonney’s Nika form revealed in One Piece Chapter 1118, using her Devil Fruit’s Distorted Future ability.
  • Bonney’s Toshi Toshi no Mi powers may mimic other Devil Fruit abilities, based on imagination and belief.
  • Bonney’s character arc and potential role in the Final Saga become more intriguing with these new abilities.

In the last few panels of One Piece Chapter 1118, Eiichiro Oda dropped a massive bombshell which forever altered the character arc of a certain individual in the Final Saga. The revelation in question was the debut of Jewelry Bonney’s Nika form via her Devil Fruit’s Distorted Future ability, which allowed her to fight the Five Elders alongside Luffy as they attempt to escape the battlefield that is Egghead Island.

Earlier, there was a lot of speculation about whether Bonney would manifest her version of Gear 5, especially after she successfully copied Luffy’s rubber powers during her escape from the Sorbet Kingdom in the flashback from One Piece Chapter 1101. Now that all these theories have been confirmed by Oda himself, another question arises. Can Bonney’s Toshi Toshi no Mi powers mimic other Devil Fruit abilities as well?

What Is Bonney’s Distorted Future Ability?

As one of her most commonly used Toshi Toshi no Mi techniques, Distorted Future permits Bonney to age someone upwards to a potential future version of themselves at a rapid pace. She has mainly been depicted using this ability on herself, although it is possible for her to apply it on others, as seen in how she aged Luffy to an elderly person in One Piece’s Egghead Arc.

The effects of this technique are temporary, and will wear off after a certain duration of time. Moreover, after using this technique on someone else, she does not have to actively maintain its effects until they disperse. Conversely, the same cannot be said for when she uses Distorted Future on herself, as it takes a fair amount of her stamina to keep the technique going, depending on the nature of the transformation she takes on.

Although Bonney could regularly age or de-age herself when she was younger, and was even shown manifesting a muscular physique like her adoptive father’s, the first time she really pushed the ability to its limit was when used against the CP8 agent Alpha. In this instance, during One Piece Chapter 1101, Bonney envisioned a version of herself who could wield the power of Sun God Nika, manifesting a body imbued with rubbery properties, which allowed her to execute attacks that resembled Luffy’s Gear 3 techniques.

Further down the line on Egghead Island, she was even able to turn herself into a giant with Distorted Future, in order to fight Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro, at a critical moment in the arc’s main conflict. Much like Luffy’s use of Gear 5 to monumentally expand the size of his body, Bonney’s transformation here provided a telling sign of things to come in One Piece.

The Power To Imagine A Nika-Like Future

While the original Nika-like future she imagined was only an approximation based on how she thought the Sun God would look, One Piece’s Egghead Arc gave her the opportunity to see Nika’s power up close through Luffy. Upon witnessing his near-divine Gear 5 transformation, Bonney was inspired to follow suit and successfully managed to emulate it with the help of Distorted Future.

After achieving this new state, which effectively copied the Awakened form of Luffy’s Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, Bonney was able to once again take on the stature of a giant, while also augmenting her offensive abilities. Although she was not able to maintain this transformation for too long due to the toll it took on her, it was a startling new application of her Devil Fruit powers that brought up many questions about what the Toshi Toshi no Mi could be capable of.

Could Distorted Future Replicate Other Devil Fruits?

Bonney’s version of Gear 5 has shed light on some of the similarities between her Devil Fruit and Luffy’s own abilities, since the limits of their respective applications are guided by one unifying factor: the imagination of their users. In fact, Bonney was only able to harness this new form after witnessing Luffy’s Nika-esque powers and the freedom with which he fought, inspiring her to follow suit.

Unlike other Devil Fruits in One Piece, which have set constraints based on the organism, substance, concept, or natural element they are associated with, the source of Luffy and Bonney’s abilities is a bit more abstract. To an extent, they seem to be enhanced by the power of belief itself, since both possess the capacity to warp reality to some extent. Hence, there is always room for the scope of their abilities to expand further, based on their own convictions about what they are capable of.

Hence, this naturally leads into the theory of whether Bonney could potentially mimic other Devil Fruit abilities in One Piece as she sees fit, based on how well she can visualize future versions of herself that possess said powers. This may seem like a stretch to some, especially since there is little chance that such possibilities will be explored when Bonney already has access to Gear 5.

That being said, the prospect of giving Bonney the power to mimic other Devil Fruits would be a very interesting direction for her character arc in the future, and it remains to be seen whether this is what Eiichiro Oda has in mind. It also invites speculation on what role she will play in One Piece’s Final Saga, when sailing alongside the Straw Hat Pirates.

What Does This Mean For Bonney’s Character?

Besides being able to tap into some of Luffy’s Gear 5 techniques, Bonney’s Nika form might have also showcased her first real use of Haki in One Piece Chapter 1119. Even if it has not been fully confirmed, it seems as if she has gained a multitude of potent power ups in a very short period of time, which may come as a surprise to some, but it is necessary when looking at the caliber of opponents that she could face in the Final Saga. All in all, Bonney’s Nika form completely shattered expectations — as Oda often does — while raising some pertinent questions about the true nature of her Devil Fruit, and the full extent of its power.
