Another Marvel fan favorite may be making a comeback. Chris Evans will reportedly return as Captain America in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Evans has played two superheroes from Marvel. He portrayed Johnny Storm, aka Human Torch, in Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). However, he is more known as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, in MCU. He played Captain America in multiple Marvel movies, including Captain America: First Avenger (2011), The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Evans is one of the “Original Six” Avengers alongside Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), and Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk). There are claims that Evans will return as Captain America in Avengers 6.
MyTimeToShineHello, one of the reputable Marvel insiders, announced on X, formerly Twitter, that Evans is “officially back for Secret Wars.” He also shared a gif of Evans as Captain America from the Avengers. The same source previously said that Evans would return for a limited series focusing on Captain America returning the Infinity Stones to their proper place and time. In Endgame, Rogers used Pym particles to travel to the Quantum realm and travel through time to return all the Infinity Stones to their original place. However, instead of returning to the present to reunite with the rest of the superheroes who survived, he decided to stay in the past and spend his life with Peggy Carter. Marvel Studious President Kevin Feige was previously asked about Evans and Robert Downey Jr.’s potential return as Captain America and Iron Man, respectively, in the MCU. Unlike Captain America, Iron Man did not survive in Endgame because he chose to sacrifice himself to defeat Thanos and save the universe. Feige said they had to pull off a similar feat with how they brought back Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine to have Evans and Downey Jr. back, suggesting that it is still possible, but it might not happen anytime soon. Prior to his most recent movie with the Merc with a Mouth, Jackman last played Wolverine in 2017’s Logan.
Feige explained:
That’s the key, right? How do you do it in a way that maintains what has come before, and in a great way? And we’ve been spending, you know, the last two-plus years figuring that out for Wolverine. So, what’s to come? We’ll see. We’re just proud that we, I think, have figured it out for Wolverine. I think Hugh’s appearance and starring role in [
Deadpool & Wolverine
] is a great sign that it can be done — if great care is taken.
The news of Evans potentially returning to the MCU received mixed responses from fans who wanted to see him portraying the Star Spangled superhero again. Those who wanted to see him back were thrilled, while others were still having second thoughts and were hopeful the report was true. “Hope you heard it right!” one commented. Meanwhile, some still asked whether Evans would return as Captain America or the Human Torch because he appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine as the latter. “As Captain America or Human Torch?” one asked. Another said, “He’s in Deadpool in his Fantastic 4 suit there’s leaks about [it] already.”
Whether Evans returns as Human Torch or Captain America, his comeback will always be welcomed by Marvel fans. However, he is more likely to play Captain America if he is to appear in the next Avengers movie. Evans is one of the original Avengers, and it will make more sense if he joins the troop with his Star Spangled Shield. Also, there are rumors that Jeremy Renner will return in Avengers 6 to reprise his role as Hawkeye. Thus, Secret Wars will be a reunion for Captain America, Hawkeye and possibly Thor, too. Jeff Sneider, another insider and entertainment reporter, claimed that Christopher Markus or Stephen McFeely will be back to pen Avengers 6. The Russo brothers will also reportedly return to direct the next two Avengers movies. Secret Wars is still three years away and the production team has to settle the issues on Avengers 5 first, which will be released a year earlier. Several members of Avenger 5‘s creative team had already left, including Destin Daniel Cretton as director, Jeff Loveness as a writer and Michael Waldron as a screenwriter. A lot of things could still happen along the way, but there’s always the possibility of bringing back the original Avengers, probably as cameos, as they are likely to attract more viewers. However, it depends on how they will be reintroduced to the audience, considering their storylines in Endgame.
Avengers 5 will be released on May 1, 2026, and Avengers 6, Avengers: Secret Wars, will hit theaters on May 7, 2027.
