The popular anime series My Hero Academia is gearing up for its seventh season, which is set to debut in April 2024. To get everyone excited, a new trailer was recently released for the upcoming season. Additionally, the studio announced that it will begin the new season with a 4-episode re-cap of the story so far to make sure that everyone is up to speed and ready for the new story to begin.
The trailer and news were both released at Jump Festa ’24. The seventh season of the anime has been anticipated for nearly a year already, though, with its announcement being made directly following the end of season six this past March. Lucky for fans, they have only had to wait one year for the new season this time, and getting a little teaser now is just what they need to hold them off for these last couple of months.
My Hero Academia is set in a world where superpowers (called “quirks”) are commonplace. However, the main character, Izuku Midoriya, is born without one. That does not stop him from wanting to become a hero himself one day, and he is recruited all the same to go to a prestigious school for superheros. The world’s greatest hero, All Might, recognizes the potential in Midoriya even though the boy was not born with a quirk, and bestows his own quirk on him to help him get into the school.
So far, My Hero Academia has been airing since April 2016, and at the time of publishing is at 138 regular episodes and 9 OVAs. That is a lot of story and material for fans to get through, and with season one having aired over six years ago, it makes sense that some may not remember the details of everything that has happened up to this point. The idea of having a re-cap before the latest season begins does make sense, especially if the events in the upcoming season will be affected by events that happened a long time ago in the story.
However, the re-cap is going to be four episodes long, and those episodes will take the place of anything new that might have aired in season seven. So, while the new series of My Hero Academia will start on the scheduled date of April 6th, 2024, there will not actually be new material yet. Instead, the first four weeks will be only the re-cap, without any new material. Thus, the actual new series will start on May 4th. For anyone watching the series who wants the new material, they will have to wait an extra month before it airs – and the new season may be four weeks’ shorter, having given up valuable time to the re-cap episodes.
My Hero Academia is not the first major anime to do something like this, and likely won’t be the last. Demon Slayer also did something similar during the series’ second full season, when it began the season with episodes that re-capped the anime’s movie Demon Slayer: Mugen Train before getting into the actual new season. That at least was catching up anyone who had not been able to see the movie (though it did have an international release) rather than just re-capping the anime series itself, but it still made the season that many episodes shorter. Whether this decision will help or hinder My Hero Academia this upcoming season remains to be seen.
