Kurogiri is a powerful villain, a member of the League of Villains, and one of the first high end Nomus capable of speech. Kurogiri was created by Dr. Kyudai Garaki by using the corpse of former U.A. High student – Oboro Shirakumo.

Oboro’s corpse was recovered by All For One and was transformed into a Nomu to look after and protect Tomura Shigaraki and also serve under All For One and his master plans. Since Oboro’s quirk was the ability to generate clouds, this would explain why Kurogiri head and hands look like a black mist with yellow glowing eyes.

When Kurogiri is first introduced, he is seen to be a calm and grounded individual even though he was a villain. He is extremely loyal towards All For One and Tomura and had been created to serve them both and obey commands. Although his personality was more reserved, Kurogiri still possessed evil traits just like his League of Villains peers. He did not stop when it comes to torturing the innocent and this is seen when he put the U.A. High students in predicaments which could have killed them.

The U.S.J Arc is when Kurogiri’s powers are truly revealed, as he is able to transport Tomura and other villains into the Unforseen simulation Joint using his quirk known as ‘warp gate’ and attacks the U.A. High students. Kurogiri states that his mission is to kill All Might and is disappointed to find out that he was not there when they arrived. All Might does, however, arrive to save the student and a full-blown fight ensues between All Might and an over-powered Nomu. Kurogiri also uses his warp gate quirk to help the Nomu fight All Might and find his weak point.

Kurogiri is also the villain who brought Stain into the League of Villains hideout to recruit him, but the conversation between Stain and Tomura does not go down well, causing a fight to take place between the villains but eventually coming to a mutual understanding of their common interest to destroy hero society. Kurogiri also possesses vast tactical knowledge when it comes to fighting and this is seen during the battle with the pro hero known as Thirteen, Kurogiri was smart enough to evade her black hole attack by reversing it on her, which resulted in Thirteen getting badly injured.

What Makes Kurogiri Powerful Enough to Look After Tomura?

Kurogiri’s quirk is a unique one, as he is able to create a black fog that allows him or anyone else who touches it to be transported to a location of his choosing. However, he needs to know exactly where to transport himself and others too before opening a portal. Kurogiri is not just able to create these black fog-like portals in one place, but is able to create multiple exit portals. The usefulness of this quirk is that Tomura is able to travel to wherever he wants to with the use of these portals. It is unknown how this particular quirk was manifested, but it is assumed it had to be one of Dr. Kyudai Garaki processes of combining multiple quirks and Oboro’s Cloud quirk that manifested the warp gate quirk.

But if you’re still in there..let’s become heroes together, Oboro.

Later in the series, Kurogiri is captured and detained. It is during this time that the pro heroes Aizawa and Present Mic realize that Kurogiri is actually their long-lost friend, Oboro Shirakumo, who was close friends to them during their time at U.A. High. This revelation angers the two friends, and they try their best to reach out to whatever is left of Oboro by attempting to connect with Kurogiri in the hopes of saving their friend from the League of Villains.
