In anime, many characters have powers that surpass regular human beings. But only a few anime characters have reached a demi-god state that put them way over the rest of the bunch, even above other members of the cast in their respective shows.
These characters that have gone way beyond heroes or villains and have reached a state of near godhood. It is not only that they have superhuman powers, but their strength lies in a nearly divine ability to surpass every foe they face. We have put together a catalog of characters that have come the closest to becoming a god in their respective universes.
10 Saitama, One Punch Man
Saitama Could Kill Gods With One Punch
Little is known of Saitama’s past life as an office worker, except that he suddenly grew tired of it, and wanted to become a hero. His encounter with the Crab monster was the trigger for his transformation in ‘Caped-Baldy,’ and though he despises this moniker, he carries the mantle of a hero with pride.
Saitama is the strongest being in One Punch Man, this is made evident by the fact that no opponent can withstand him going serious. And even during his fight against Boros, a being close to a “space god,” he showed that the fight was nearly a warm-up for him. Saitama could easily kill a god or two with one punch, but people underestimate him all the time.
9 Ichigo Kurosaki, Bleach
Ichigo Kurosaki Is The Closest To Become a True God
Ichigo Kurosaki’s fate was sealed when he met Rukia, but his destiny was always to surpass both Shinigami and Quincy and become something else. Over the passing of the Bleach arcs, fans have witnessed Ichigo surpass every foe, even Aizen, who called himself a god.
In Bleach Thousand-Year Blood War, after successfully completing his training with Captain Ouetsu Nimiya, he was able to let go of his past that was holding him back, and now he has reached a near-invincible state, and many fans compare him to Aizen in its final stages. But will he reach true godhood? Time will tell.
8 Eren Yaeger, Shingeki No Kiojin
Eren Yaeger Has Come Close To Become A Merciless God
Eren Yaeger is one of the most iconic anime characters of the past 10 years, and since he’s not precisely a hero, nor a villain, the Attack on Titan community is split between hating him or loving him. But this character is part of this list of singular beings closer to divinity due to his access to all the powers of the Titans through his possession of the Original Titan.
His connection to Ymir Fritz granted him access to many incredible powers, and some fans even theorize he was able to travel far back in time, to influence hundreds of key events in the plot, ultimately arriving at the conclusion that he foresaw, by ending all wars. That’s why Eren came closer than anybody else in the Attack on Titan universe to become a god.
7 Griffith, Berserk
Griffith’s Power Puts Him Above All Humans
In Berserk, Griffith plays the role of the main antagonist, a former colleague of Guts, a betrayer, and a loathsome villain that every fan of this anime has learned to despise. With his dubious and twisted moral standards, he has manipulated countless victims to accomplish his selfish goals.
After being reborn as one of the God Hand members, he has near invulnerability, an overwhelming presence capable of charming every being around him, telekinesis, and gravity manipulation abilities. This combination of powers alongside his skills with the sword makes him the closest to a Dark God in the world of Berserk.
6 Zamazu, Dragon Ball Super
Zamasu’s Ambition Has Led Him To Become A Dark Demi-God
By stealing Goku’s body, Zamazu the fallen Kai from an alternative timeline, managed to reach a demi-god state and promptly attacked other timelines in his quest for power. Taping into Goku’s natural ability to get stronger he was able to break the gap between a regular Super Saiyan and SS God, transforming into a being of pure evil.
Afterward, he went on a rampage throughout other universes, amassing more power, and even facing Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks in a showdown, where he ultimately fused himself with his past self, becoming even more dangerous and unstable.
5 Lain Iwakura, Serial Experiments Lain
Lain Iwakura Becomes A Technological Pseudo-Goddess
When Iwakura Lain discovers that an allegedly dead student is still alive and trapped in the network, she intends to find the truth. In a dramatic turn of the classic coming-of-age trope, Serial Experiments Lain covers deep philosophical and psychological topics considered avant-garde at the time of its release.
Lain dives into the subworld created by Protocol Seven, and gains knowledge of the Wired state, becoming aware of her true self: A technological being capable of incredible feats, with almost omniscience and omnipotence, and the ability to overcome time and space itself. She has become a pseudo-goddess, or at least, a being far beyond the reach of mere mankind.
4 Vegeta, Dragon Ball Super
Vegeta Is The Next In Line To Become God Of Destruction
Vegeta was the first to notice that Goku was about to reach the realm of the Gods. This motivated him to train harder than ever, at the point of reaching a state in which even Beerus, the God of Destruction has acknowledged him as his true successor and disciple.
Vegeta’s power has elevated to a demi-god state, where he can channel part of the power of a God of Destruction through his Ultra Ego mode, a transformation that turns his hair into a deep purple with a starry pattern. Contrary to the defense-centered Ultra Instinct of Goku, Vegeta’s latest transformation unleashes his raw-unbridled power, putting him one step toward becoming a true god.
3 Seiya, Saint Seiya
Saint Seiya’s Cosmos Has Reached Divinity Levels
Seiya’s immense Cosmos power has been made manifest throughout the series and has reached near-divinity rates. Seiya is a noble spirit, and though he was always underestimated by his rivals, this Bronze Saint has proven his worthiness to belong to Atena’s chosen over and over again.
His power has reached beyond the seventh, eighth, and ninth senses, a realm only attainable to deities. During his battle against Apollo, he was able to unleash the Miraculous Cosmos and the Supreme Virtue and was able to injure the strongest of the gods. If that doesn’t put him into the realm of the gods, at least he is on his way to being on par with them.
2 Accelerator, A Certain Magical Index
Accelerator’s Esper Abilities Grant Him Near God-like Power
Accelerator is considered by many fans of A Certain Magical Index as the most broken and powerful of all characters in the series. Through his control of Vectors alongside his unwavering will and considerable intellect, he can calculate and redirect any force that surrounds him.
But his powers as an Esper go way beyond just that. Other espers and powerful people including Kamijou Touma have witnessed Accelerator surpass his classification as a level 5 esper, and go way beyond the powers of their world. You could say that Accelerator has godlike powers, earning him the moniker of “The One Who Wields the Power of God.”
1 Gilgamesh, Fate Series
Gilgamesh The Hero King Is The Mortal Who Was Closest To Becoming God
In terms of power, Gilgamesh is the strongest of all servants in the Fate series. The King of Heroes is the strongest mortal who had achieved near-godhood upon the peak of his reign. When the Grail turned him into a servant, it took into consideration that Gilgamesh was the origin of all myths, since he was literally the first Hero of Mankind, and also reigned over all heroes.
His Noble Phantasm reflects this by summoning all armaments from all existent heroes in the world, and that includes their own Noble Phantasms. This power by itself turns him into a godlike existence that even has the power to go against its masters when summoned as a Grail War servant.
