Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) is an FBI agent with a very intuitive nature, bordering on psychic abilities, and this lands her a lead role on a task force investigating Nicolas Cage’s terrifying serial killer, Longlegs, who targets families in a series of murder suicides. The victims in all the cases share the same birthday, with a cryptic letter left at each crime scene, signed by Longlegs himself.

Harker attempts to decipher the peculiar letters which feature satanic symbols and bizarre codes. Harker teams up with Agent Carter (Blair Underwood), who has taken her under his wing after seeing her potential, and the pair try to solve the mysterious case. Carter introduces Harker to his daughter Ruby and wife, Anna, after a long day on the case, and she is subsequently invited to Ruby’s birthday party in a week’s time, which she agrees to attend.

The case gets weirder when Harker and Carter find a creepy doll at an old crime scene, and the head has a peculiar metal orb inside of it, and after an ultrasound is performed on it, it gives off whisper like noises which trigger Harker’s psychic powers. This prompts Harker to visit the only survivor of the crime, who now resides in a mental institution. Turns out, the girl was given one of Longlegs’ dolls as a birthday present. Not long after receiving the present, her father murdered the family, but she survived as she was away on a school trip. It is then discovered that the girl heard voices from Longlegs, coming from inside the doll that would give her instructions on what to do, and she would abide by these at the cost of anything.

How does Longlegs end?

Harker visits her religious mother, Ruth, (played by Urban Legend star Alicia Witt) and finds a bunch of polaroids in her childhood bedroom, and one of the pictures reveals a pale-faced man, who she thinks is Longlegs. This links back to the opening scene of the movie, which saw a little girl (who is now known to be Harker) using her polaroid camera to take a picture of the same pale-faced man who had approached her.

Harker hands the picture to Agent Carter, and the FBI track Longlegs down to a bus stop, and they arrest him. During the interrogation, Longlegs requests a visit from Harker, which leads to a confrontation between the pair. Longlegs says he worships Satan, and wishes Harker a happy birthday, and tells her to ask her mother about his accomplice in the crimes, before he brutally smashes his face on the table, which results in Longlegs’ death.

Harker heads to Ruth’s house, to confront her, along with Agent Browning (Michelle Choi-Lee). As Harker heads inside the house to find her mother, Browning stays in the car and is brutally shot to death by Ruth. Harker witnesses the murder and runs outside to stop Ruth, who then shoots the head off a doll that resembles her daughter, which causes Harker to pass out.

In a flashback sequence, it is revealed that Harker’s mother was actually Longlegs’ accomplice, and she would pose as a nun, and deliver the possessed dolls to families who would later be killed.

She forced Longlegs to agree not to kill her daughter when she was a child, and it turns out, Harker got psychic powers from her own doll and this was the guiding force in her life. Back to the present timeline, Harker wakes up in the basement of her childhood home, and hears a ringing phone. She answers it and a creepy voice tells her:

You’re late to Ruby’s party.

Harker races to the Carter’s house, but her mother is already there, and she has the Carter family in a weird trance with the assistance of Ruby’s doll that she’s been gifted with for her birthday. Carter ends up murdering his wife in the kitchen, and Harker shoots Carter dead as he approaches her with the bloody murder weapon. Harker then kills her mother before she can kill Ruby and complete her wicked ritual. However, Harker is unable to destroy the doll as she runs out of bullets, leaving her fate hanging in the balance.Longlegs ends with the brutal serial killer back in the interrogation room, announcing “Hail, Satan” as he blows a kiss before the screen cuts to black, and T-Rex’s hit song, ‘Get It On’, kicks in during the credits.
