As the long-awaited third season of KonoSuba begins to reach its end, Darkness finds herself in the most trouble she’s ever been in. In order to pay off the debts incurred by her family, she is forced to wed the unscrupulous Lord Alderp, and there is little that Kazuma and the others can do to stop it.
This week’s episode of KonoSuba is a little less comedy-focused than the last few, instead taking some time to seriously focus on the drama in Darkness’s situation and Kazuma’s own personal desire to save her from her troubles. This arc is about to hit its climax, and time will tell exactly how this bit of drama will reach its conclusion.
Interlopers
Megumin And Aqua Get In The Way
As news of the wedding begins to spread throughout the town of Axel, Megumin and Aqua continue their bizarre attempts to stop Darkness from marrying Alderp. Megumin goes as far as to send a threatening letter promising to cast an Explosion on the chapel if the wedding isn’t canceled, while Aqua makes a nuisance of herself in front of the Dustiness mansion in an attempt to draw Darkness out of her seclusion. Neither of their attempts are successful, and Megumin is even jailed for several days due to the threats she’s made.
Meanwhile, Kazuma remains stubborn about not helping Darkness until she asks for his help first, and passes the days crafting new items from his world to sell to Vanir and keeping both Megumin and Aqua in check. At one point, Megumin confronts Kazuma about his inaction, and even tries to use a fake love confession to push him into doing something, a tactic that is easily seen through. In the end, Kazuma remains firm in his stubbornness, refusing to lift a single finger to help stop the wedding.
Despite Megumin and Aqua’s best attempts, the day of the wedding eventually arrives unimpeded. Megumin attempts one more time to get Kazuma to disrupt the wedding, but she is rebuffed yet again. However, in a rare show of vulnerability, Kazuma reveals that he knows how awfully Alderp treats women, but he can’t figure out a way to keep Darkness from marrying him and clearing her debt. In addition, despite constant rumors of his debauchery going around, there’s no solid proof Kazuma can use to accuse him. Realizing that Kazuma has been trying to help Darkness this whole time, Megumin leaves him alone.
A Visit From A Devil
Vanir’s Once In A Lifetime Deal
After Megumin leaves, Vanir immediately arrives, looking to broker another deal with Kazuma for his otherworld creations, especially after Wiz bought yet another useless and dangerous product. After looking over his newest offerings, Vanir immediately offers Kazuma a large sum of cash in exchange for the intellectual property rights for all of his creations. Kazuma is hesitant to accept the deal, but when Vanir brings up Darkness, her mysterious debt, and the inscrutable dealings of Lord Alderp, he becomes interested.
After a short interruption by Aqua, who immediately decimates one of Vanir’s earthen bodies with a Sacred Exorcism, Vanir starts to explain how the Dustiness family ended up in debt. Around the time when the Mobile Fortress Destroyer was still active, many peasant farmlands were destroyed in its rampage. The farmers begged for aid from the local lord, Alderp, but he rebuffed them without another thought. They then went to the Dustiness family, who borrowed the aid from Alderp so that the farmers could be compensated. Vanir then reveals that the Dustiness family had also helped to pay for a large portion of the damage done to Axel due to Aqua’s flood magic, which meant that they had difficulty paying Alderp back. It’s then revealed that Alderp suggested to Darkness that if they couldn’t pay back the money, she could pay him back with her body.
Kazuma’s Resolve
Time To Interrupt A Wedding
With the truth behind Darkness’s debt and subsequent marriage, Kazuma resolves to stop it at all costs. He asks Vanir how much money it would take to pay off Darkness’s debt, and Vanir reveals that all of their current assets, along with the bag of gold he offered Kazuma today, would be just enough to cover the cost. Though Kazuma would have to give up all intellectual rights to the various products he had developed so far, he takes the deal without any further hesitation and sets out to stop Darkness’s wedding.
Meanwhile, as the chapel prepares for the wedding, Alderp is prevented by a servant of the Dustiness family from entering Darkness’s room while she is getting ready. As she continues getting ready, Darkness is reminded of Kazuma. Darkness thinks back on the adventures she had with Kazuma and the others, and sees it as a miracle she otherwise wouldn’t have been about to experience. As the wedding begins, Darkness and Alderp are surprised by the priestess’s surprisingly scathing monologue, particularly towards Alderp. The priestess reveals herself to be Aqua, and while everyone is distracted, Kazuma runs up disguised as a guard and pulls Darkness from the altar, ready to help her escape.
